Russia moves frontline toward Kharkiv . Russian President Vladimir Putin said Russia is moving the frontline back toward Kharkiv to reduce attacks on Belgorod and other populated areas.
“ Now we are simply forced to push back the front line towards Kharkiv in order to actually reduce attacks on Belgorod and other populated areas ,” Mr Putin said.
The Russian military previously announced that the Northern Army had begun fighting in the direction of Belgorod bordering Kharkiv, marking the appearance of the sixth army in the campaign in Ukraine.
Experts say Kharkiv in northeastern Ukraine, bordering Russia's Belgorod, is certainly a key target for Moscow. Kharkiv - an industrial, cultural and political center of Ukraine - is said to be among the Kremlin's top priority targets.
NATO and Ukraine are missing a chance to end the crisis . The head of the State Duma's international affairs committee Leonid Slutsky said that NATO and Ukraine, having rejected the peaceful nature of President Putin's proposals to end the conflict, are missing a real chance to end the crisis.
“ The ultimatum is more in line with the so-called ‘peace formula’ that the West is pushing in Switzerland. NATO and Ukraine have rejected the peaceful nature of Mr Putin’s proposals on the terms of ending the conflict, they have essentially agreed that there is no need for peace ,” Mr Slutsky said.
According to Mr. Slutsky, the US-led coalition is falling into confrontation with Russia, wanting to achieve the goal of Moscow's "strategic defeat".
“ Russia will not repeat peace proposals a hundred times. The Russian armed forces can drive the enemy out of Donbass and achieve the goals of the Northern Military District ,” Slutsky pointed out.
Putin reveals troop numbers involved in Ukraine conflict . President Vladimir Putin said that about 700,000 Russian troops are involved in the country's conflict with Ukraine. The number is up nearly 100,000 from his previous estimate in December 2023.
The Russian leader gave the latest estimate during a meeting with veterans of special operations . Addressing the veterans, Mr. Putin said: "We love you all and consider you part of our family."
Late last year, President Putin estimated the number of people involved in Russia's military campaign in Ukraine at around 617,000.
Ukraine rejects Russia's peace proposal . Mykhailo Podolyak, an aide to the President of Ukraine, has rejected the peace initiative put forward by President Putin, saying it is unrealistic.
Mr Podolyak wrote on the X social network that Mr Putin “has not made a real peace proposal” and has shown no desire to end the conflict. The Ukrainian president’s aide argued that Mr Putin’s plan focused on Kiev giving up its territory and sovereignty and leaving it “unprotected” by not joining NATO.
According to Mr. Podolyak, Russia will continue the conflict in "new forms" if Kiev accepts any points of the proposal.

NATO plans to establish many bases near Ukraine . Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban revealed that NATO is planning to establish three large military bases in Eastern Europe to coordinate the supply of weapons to Ukraine, but Hungary will not participate.
According to Mr Orban, the US-led military bloc is looking to help Ukraine by establishing a so-called NATO Ukraine mission. "This means that NATO will coordinate the supply of weapons to Ukraine. For that purpose, they will create three large bases."
The Hungarian prime minister expressed concern that if such bases were built in Poland, Slovakia, Romania and other countries neighboring Ukraine, they would become military targets. However, Mr. Orban stressed that Hungary - which also borders Ukraine - would not participate in such efforts and did not want to become a military target for Russia. "We are not spending a single penny. We are not opening our territory... If there is any action outside Ukraine, Hungary will not participate."
According to Mr. Orban, unlike Poland and Romania - two countries that could join the fight, Slovakia is being cautious and Hungary will take security measures because it is close to the war zone.
NATO rejects Russia's ceasefire conditions . NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said that the ceasefire conditions that President Putin just proposed only benefit Russia.
“ This proposal would mean that Russia achieves its war goals by hoping that Ukraine will give up more territory than Russia has been able to control so far ,” Mr Stoltenberg said.
The NATO chief said the proposal was intended to be “aggressive” and demonstrate that “Russia’s goal is to control Ukraine.”
