RT reported on November 12 that Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov called on the US to consider a proposal to extend the New START treaty, which will expire on February 5, for another year.

The New START treaty, signed in 2010, limits the number of deployed nuclear warheads to 1,550 and limits the number of nuclear-capable missiles and their launchers, as well as heavy bombers.

Speaking to reporters on November 11, Mr. Lavrov said the proposal was still under consideration.

"Let's take a year to 'cool down', if you like, and consider the responsibilities of the great powers for global security and stability, especially in preventing nuclear war. We are ready. The extension of the limit on the number of weapons can be announced at any time before February 5," Foreign Minister Lavrov said.

The Russian Defense Ministry said last month it had not received any official response from Washington on the matter.

In September 2025, Russian President Vladimir Putin proposed extending the treaty for another year, citing the need to avoid an arms race and escalation of tensions.

On October 30, US President Donald Trump ordered the country to prepare to conduct nuclear weapons tests “on an equal basis” with Russia and China. Energy Secretary Chris Wright later explained that the planned tests would not include actual nuclear explosions, which the US stopped conducting in 1992.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov reiterated last week that Moscow would not lift its nuclear testing moratorium unless the US did so first.

It is known that both the US and Russia have tested missiles without nuclear warheads in recent months.
