During the operation on the night of May 23rd and the early morning of May 24th, the Russian Ministry of Defense announced that it had deployed the Oreshnik medium-range hypersonic ballistic missile system, the Iskander ballistic missile, the Kinzhal and Zircon hypersonic cruise missiles, as well as various types of cruise missiles launched from the air, sea, land, and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).
RT reported that the attack took place shortly after Russian President Vladimir Putin instructed the Ministry of Defense to "submit options" for responding to Ukraine's drone strike on a teacher training college dormitory in Luhansk, which killed 21 people and injured 42, mostly teenage girls.
The Russian Ministry of Defense stated that the targets of the bombing campaign were military command and control facilities, air bases, and enterprises belonging to Ukraine's defense industrial complex.
"The attack has been completed. All target positions have been hit," the Russian Ministry of Defense confirmed.
On the same Sunday, Ukrainian media and Telegram channels posted numerous videos showing clusters of bright objects hurtling across the sky at breakneck speed.
On Friday, the dormitory of Starobelsk College, affiliated with Luhansk Pedagogical University, located in the town of Starobelsk, was attacked by multiple Ukrainian drone strikes while students were sleeping inside. Putin described it as a deliberate "act of terrorism."
Governor Leonid Pasechnik declared two days of national mourning (May 24 and 25), calling the attack an “exceptionally serious crime” and stating that those responsible would face “appropriate and unavoidable punishment.”
Moscow first publicly confirmed firing Oreshnik missiles in November 2024, during an attack on the Yuzhmash defense industrial complex in Dnepropetrovsk. According to the Russian Ministry of Defense, the weapon was deployed a second time in January of this year, leveling an aircraft repair plant in Lviv.
According to Kyiv Independent on May 24, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky acknowledged that the missile had fallen near the city of Bila Tserkva in central Ukraine, adding: “They have truly lost their minds. The important thing is that Russia cannot be exempted from this.”
The Russian attack on the night of May 24th killed at least two people and injured 80 others. In total, Russia launched 600 drones and 90 missiles into Ukraine that night. According to the Ukrainian Air Force, air defenses shot down 604 of these weapons. Sybiha described it as “one of the biggest attacks” on the Ukrainian capital.
