Russia accuses Ukrainian intelligence of considering using dirty bombs
Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB) said on June 6.6 that the General Intelligence Service of Ukraine (GUR) considered detonating a "dirty bomb" on Russian territory, according to RT Radio. The FSB also said that preparations for a "terrorist attack" using dirty bombs were revealed during an investigation into Kyiv's use of light aircraft for covert missions against Russia.
GUR has a special branch that operates light aircraft, which can fly at low altitudes undetected, according to the FSB.
The FSB has released footage of the interrogation of Dmitry Shimansky, a suspected Ukrainian pilot who was intercepted while on such a mission. Shimansky was detained in May in the Tula region, about 5 kilometers south of Moscow, when his plane landed to transport unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) parts and explosives for a planned attack on a Russian military airport, according to the FSB.
According to the FSB, pilot Shimansky testified that the GUR leadership considered using a similar tactic to prepare for a dirty bomb attack in Russia. A dirty bomb is a conventional explosive device covered with radioactive material, which contaminates a large surrounding area after the bomb detonates.
The Russian government has accused Ukraine of carrying out a series of sabotage activities on Russian territory, including two recent drone attacks in Moscow. Those attacks led to a Russian retaliatory attack on GUR's headquarters in Kyiv, according to RT.
There is no word yet on Kyiv's response to the FSB's allegation. Earlier, Ukraine denied attacking Moscow with drones.
