Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov made the statement when asked by the TASS news agency about European negotiations. According to him, Europe is discussing the selection of a candidate to lead negotiations with Russia. Moscow is listening to statements from European capitals that they will negotiate with Russia. And Russia affirms its readiness for negotiations with Europe.
"Over the past three to four weeks, we have heard statements from Finnish President Alexander Stubb. And we have also heard statements from Berlin that sooner or later direct negotiations with Russia will be necessary," Peskov said.
"Russia is ready to engage in negotiations with Europe," Peskov emphasized. "We believe that dialogue is always better than outright confrontation, which is what Europe is doing now. If Europe's position changes in a way that favors dialogue, we will welcome it."
Amid claims that the European Union is preparing for potential talks with Russia, the Kremlin has indicated that Moscow is ready to engage in dialogue with Europe but will not initiate it on its own.
The European Union's preparations for potential talks with Russia come as Europe grows increasingly frustrated with negotiations – aimed at ending the war in Ukraine – brokered by US President Donald Trump. Europe is under increasing pressure to independently participate in the negotiations related to the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
As the administration of US President Donald Trump focused more on the Iran crisis, the EU began actively discussing the possibility of appointing a separate special envoy for peace talks between Kyiv and Moscow.
