Russia is preparing to evacuate hundreds of children from villages near Ukraine due to the increasingly complicated situation in the border province of Belgorod.
"The situation in the border village of Shebekino is getting worse. We started evacuating children from the Shebekino and Graivoron districts from today," Vyacheslav Gladkov, governor of Belgorod province bordering Ukraine, posted on Telegram on May 31.
The first 300 children will be evacuated to Voronezh, southwestern Russia, Mr Gladkov said.
According to the governor of Belgorod, the border village of Shebekino was attacked with artillery early this morning, injuring four people. A day earlier, Shebekino was also shelled, killing one person.

Russia has repeatedly accused Ukraine of carrying out attacks on its territory, targeting civilian and military infrastructure. The Ukrainian government and military have not accepted responsibility for the explosions inside Russia.
Russia's Belgorod province has recently been hit by repeated nighttime raids, which are considered the largest and most daring since the country launched hostilities in Ukraine in February 2022.
The Russian capital Moscow was attacked by a UAV on May 30, causing minor injuries, forcing some residents to evacuate and causing minor damage to infrastructure. Russia accused Ukraine of being behind the attack, but Kiev denied it. The attack shocked the Russian capital and began to fear that it could be affected by the conflict in Ukraine.
