Russian forces carried out an attack on Kyiv on the night of May 23rd and the early morning of May 24th, considered one of the largest airstrikes targeting the Ukrainian capital since the conflict broke out more than four years ago.
According to Ukrainian officials and President Volodymyr Zelensky, at least two people were killed and more than 62 injured in Kyiv. Affected targets included residential homes, student dormitories, car service centers, and shopping malls.
The Ukrainian Air Force said Russia launched 600 drones and 90 missiles into Ukraine overnight, primarily targeting Kyiv. Ukrainian air defenses reported shooting down 604 airborne weapons. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha described it as “one of the largest” attacks on the capital Kyiv.
President Zelensky also confirmed that Russia used Oreshnik hypersonic missiles targeting Bila Tserkva, a city in central Ukraine. The Oreshnik is a very high-speed missile and is considered by Russia to be one of its most powerful weapons. According to Zelensky, a total of 83 people were injured nationwide.

"Unfortunately, not all ballistic missiles were shot down. Kyiv bore the brunt of the attack and was the primary target of this offensive," Zelensky said.
Tymur Tkachenko, head of Kyiv's military government, said the Ukrainian capital had suffered a "large-scale ballistic missile attack" and urged residents to stay in shelters.
The attack followed Russian President Vladimir Putin's accusation that Ukraine had committed "acts of terrorism," related to a drone strike on a dormitory in Starobilsk, a Russian-controlled town in eastern Luhansk. Putin instructed the Russian Ministry of Defense to propose a response.
The TASS news agency, citing the Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations, reported that the number of children killed in the attack in Starobilsk has risen to 18. Ukraine has rejected Moscow's accusations, claiming that Russian media are spreading "manipulative information" and asserting that Ukrainian troops only attacked military infrastructure or facilities used for military purposes.
