Mr. Peskov issued the warning when asked to comment on the decision of the US House Foreign Affairs Committee on November 7 to support a bill that would consider the possibility of Washington transferring to Kiev some of Moscow's seized assets.
“This decision is illegal, contrary to all possible norms, and will of course be indefinitely opposed by our country. This determination will bring very serious judicial and legal costs to those who made and abused this decision,” the Kremlin spokesman said.
He also affirmed that Russia will study response measures that best suit its interests.
Earlier, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said that Western countries are considering a possible legal basis for transferring frozen assets of the Russian Federation to Ukraine.
According to Mr. Blinken, to confiscate Russian assets, the West must confirm that “there is a legal basis for this action”.
Since the spring of 2022, the European Union (EU) has repeatedly announced the freezing of about $300 billion of Russia's gold and foreign exchange reserves.
* In a related development, on November 8, US Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs James O'Brien announced that the West will not return nearly $300 billion worth of frozen Russian assets if the country does not compensate for the losses caused by the special military campaign to Ukraine.
Speaking at a hearing before the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Mr. O'Brien stated: "President (US Joe Biden) and his colleagues in the G7 Group have confirmed that Russia must pay compensation.
“The amount of frozen Russian assets in the West, which is about $300 billion, will not be returned to Russia until it makes reparations. So we have leverage in this discussion.”
