According to the Belarusian Ministry of Defense , the exercises began on May 19th with the participation of missile and air forces from both countries. The main focus was on the secret deployment of nuclear weapons, maneuvering to pre-prepared launch positions, and training in combat readiness under realistic conditions.

According to a statement from Minsk, Russian and Belarusian military units will practice transporting weapons to simulated launch sites and rehearse launch preparation procedures in emergency situations.
The Belarusian Ministry of Defense emphasized that this was a "planned training exercise," not aimed against any country and posing no threat to regional security.
However, the exercise is taking place against the backdrop of Belarus and Russia strengthening their military cooperation more extensively than ever before. In 2023, Russia deployed tactical nuclear weapons to Belarus following requests from Minsk. By 2025, Moscow is expected to further deploy the Oreshnik hypersonic missile system, capable of carrying nuclear warheads, to its ally.
Belarusian leaders argue that these moves are a necessary response to what they describe as increasingly hardline and confrontational policies from the West.
In early 2026, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko declared that Minsk had "no other choice" but to strengthen its defense capabilities, especially as NATO continued to expand its military presence in Eastern Europe.
Lukashenko specifically mentioned Poland, a neighboring NATO member, as Warsaw is significantly increasing the size of its military and expanding military cooperation with Western countries.
In late April, Polish media reported that Warsaw and Paris were preparing joint military exercises simulating both conventional and nuclear attacks against Russia and Belarus.
This information emerged just days after French President Emmanuel Macron and Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced they would expand military cooperation to counter what they called the "threat from Russia." Tusk then asserted that cooperation between Poland and France in the military field, including nuclear cooperation and joint exercises, would be "unlimited."
Meanwhile, Macron did not rule out the possibility of deploying French nuclear-armed aircraft to Poland, while promising "concrete steps" on nuclear cooperation in the near future.
Russia has repeatedly rejected accusations that it intends to attack NATO, calling these claims "absurd".
Russia also criticized the planned nuclear exercises between France and Poland, arguing that the move reflects a trend toward "militarization and nuclearization of Europe" and increases security instability on the continent.
