On June 19, as part of his two-day visit to North Korea, Russian President Vladimir Putin held talks with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un at the Sun Palace in Pyongyang.
During the talks, President Putin affirmed that bilateral cooperation between Moscow and Pyongyang is based on the principles of equality and respect for each other's interests. He also appreciated North Korea's support for Russia's policies.
For his part, in his opening remarks at the talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un declared that North Korea is determined to promote strategic cooperation with Russia in the future, and said that the relationship between Moscow and Pyongyang is entering a new phase of prosperity. Mr. Kim Jong Un affirmed Pyongyang's full support for Moscow's policies.
According to Mr. Kim Jong Un, at this meeting, Mr. Kim Jong Un and Mr. Putin hope to exchange ideas and constructive opinions on enhancing cooperation and mutual exchange between the two countries in all fields.
According to Nikkei Asia, Russian President V. Putin visited North Korea once before in July 2000, met with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in the Russian Far East in 2019 and in 2023.
The two countries have had increasing diplomatic and economic exchanges in recent years and Mr Putin's visit, his first to North Korea in nearly 24 years, is the latest sign of growing bilateral cooperation.
