On November 22, Mr. Tran Van Thang - Deputy Director of U Minh Thuong National Park - said that he had just recorded the reappearance of the Javan old bird ( scientific name Leptoptilos javanicus ). This is a rare bird species, listed in the Red Book and in need of conservation.
This bird has a bare head and neck, sometimes with a few brown feathers. Its back, wings and tail are greenish-black; the underwing coverts are black, and the belly is white. The full-legged Java is pale green or pale black, about 1.2 m tall and weighs 6-7 kg/adult bird.
In 2002, the unit discovered 7 mature nests of Javan ibis (each nest has 2 to 4 chicks). They live in mangrove forests, coastal alluvial and flooded grasslands, lakes, rice fields; eat fish, frogs, toads, snakes.
By June 2003, the park recorded 114 mature Javan birds. However, over time they gradually disappeared and the unit rarely detected them.
Mr. Thang added that the reason why the Javan ibis are becoming rare is because their nesting and foraging grounds have been reduced or because of cajuput forest fires, which have narrowed the living space of this bird species.
"Today, the unit recorded a large Javan elephant in the water of U Minh Thuong National Park, foraging and flying over the cajuput forest. This is very valuable and the unit is trying to preserve the diverse ecosystem so that they can live and reproduce more," said Mr. Thang.
