A remarkable picture
For the Industry and Trade sector, in 2023, the direct impacts of difficulties include a sharp decline in industrial production in the first months of the year (in the first two months of the year, the processing and manufacturing industry decreased by 6.9%, something that has never happened in many years).
However, Vietnam's industrial production still maintained its growth rate compared to the previous year, and the scale of industrial production continued to expand. One of the bright spots of industrial production is the processing and manufacturing industry, which is also the industry that mainly determines the growth rate of the entire industrial sector, creating the largest added value for the industrial sector and is the main driving force in the country's economic growth over the past years, contributing to the country's successful implementation of socio-economic development.
Specifically, the increase in the processing and manufacturing sector in the last months of the year has increased the industrial production index for the whole year of 2023 compared to the same period last year (IIP in 2023 is estimated to increase by 2.3% compared to 2022; of which the processing and manufacturing industry is estimated to increase by 3.1%, higher than the general increase of the whole industry). The industrial value added is estimated to increase by 2.98% for the whole year, of which the processing and manufacturing industry is estimated to increase by 3.48%, contributing positively to the recovery of the economy.
The production index of some key secondary industries in 2023 is estimated to increase compared to the same period last year: Production of rubber and plastic products is estimated to increase by 9.7%; metal ore mining is estimated to increase by 10.2%; tobacco production is estimated to increase by 10.2%; production of chemicals and chemical products is estimated to increase by 8.5%; production of prefabricated metal products (except machinery and equipment) is estimated to increase by 6.7%; production of beds, cabinets, tables and chairs is estimated to increase by 6.7%; food processing production is estimated to increase by 6.5%; textiles are estimated to increase by 6.1%...
Many localities have made efforts to overcome difficulties, gradually restored production, and maintained good industrial performance with the IIP index increasing in most localities across the country (increasing in 50 localities and decreasing in 13 localities). Localities that maintained good growth are: Tra Vinh, Bac Giang , Phu Tho, Nam Dinh, Khanh Hoa, Kien Giang, Ha Nam, Hai Phong, Ninh Thuan, Dak Lak, Quang Ninh, Bac Kan, Hau Giang, Phu Yen, Thai Binh,...
Focus on some key industries
Looking back at 2023, Minister of Industry and Trade Nguyen Hong Dien said that the Ministry has gradually implemented the strategic goals of the Party and Government on creating a foundation to create momentum for the industry to continue to develop systematically and steadily. These include the National Power Development Plan; Petroleum Reserve and Supply Infrastructure Plan; National Energy Master Plan; and Mineral Exploration, Exploitation and Processing Plan approved by the Prime Minister. These are very important frameworks for Vietnam to move towards a modern and sustainable industry serving the country's development and also in line with the international green economy and green industry trends.
Another noteworthy highlight is that the Ministry of Industry and Trade has coordinated with the Ministry of Planning and Investment, along with many localities nationwide, to implement many solutions to connect FDI enterprises and domestic enterprises to develop the processing, manufacturing and supporting industries.
At the same time, a series of industrial promotion activities have also been widely deployed by the Ministry in provinces and localities across the country. Not only large corporations and enterprises, the Ministry of Industry and Trade also focuses on and cares for small and micro enterprises to support their development and keep up with the trend of Industry 4.0.
“These achievements have shown the correctness in the direction, goals and leadership of the Party and Government in comprehensively promoting the country’s industrialization process, developing basic industries and priority industries in a modern direction. As well as not forgetting small and medium-sized enterprises,” said the industry commander.
With the above positive results, it can be seen that the industrial sector continues to maintain high and relatively comprehensive growth momentum and continues to be the driving force leading the growth of the entire economy.
However, Minister Nguyen Hong Dien also frankly said that the Ministry still has a lot of work to do to innovate more strongly in implementing the Government's goal of creating a space and ecosystem for industrial and commercial development, especially the processing, manufacturing, import and export industries, and healthy development of the domestic market... More specifically, how to spread the spirit of companionship and stronger service of the Industry and Trade sector to each citizen, business and international partners.
To implement this, the Minister affirmed that in the coming time, there will be more positive changes in restructuring the industry and trade sector, associated with renewing the growth model towards enhancing the application of science and technology, innovation, improving productivity, quality, efficiency, competitiveness, autonomy, adaptability and resilience of the economy.
In particular, focus on developing fundamental, important industries and supporting industries. In particular, prioritize the development of a number of key industries, new technologies, and high technologies (such as chip manufacturing, semiconductors, mineral exploitation and processing) to become a new driving force to promote the development of the processing and manufacturing industry.
