According to the International Diabetes Federation (IDF), by 2025, up to 11.1% of adults worldwide (equivalent to 1 in 9 of the population) will be living with diabetes. Notably, more than 40% of patients do not know they have the disease, increasing the risk of serious complications.
In Vietnam, the rate of diabetes is increasing rapidly, even among young people. A national survey by the Central Endocrinology Hospital showed that: In 2002, the rate of the disease was 2.7%; by 2012 it had doubled to 5.4%. In 2020, the rate of diabetes reached 7.3%, while the rate of pre-diabetes reached 17.8%. Worryingly, more than 60% of people with the disease have not been diagnosed, and more than half of adults have never had their blood sugar tested.
In 2025, IDF chose the theme "Diabetes and Comprehensive Health", calling on the community to take action to control the disease that is threatening global health, while emphasizing the role of cooperation between individuals, communities and health systems. Experts recommend that patients need regular check-ups at endocrinology facilities, receive consultation, adjust regimens, detect complications early and receive psychological support.
