DTO - In order to help the poor "settle down", Dong Thap province has many charity house building groups with thousands of members. These groups participate in mobilizing funds and directly contribute to building houses for people in difficult circumstances; contributing to the implementation of the Temporary Housing Elimination Program and the National Target Program on New Rural Construction (housing criteria).
Members of the Charity House Building Team No. 2 in Dinh Yen (Dong Thap province) build houses for families with housing difficulties.
At 4:00 a.m., members of the Charity House Building Team No. 2 in Dinh Yen (Dong Thap Province) gathered on the bus and moved from Lai Vung Commune to Doc Binh Kieu Commune to build a house for Mr. Huynh Van Dong and 2 other households in the same commune. Mr. Huynh Van Dong's house was built in a prefabricated style (brick floor, galvanized steel pipe frame, corrugated iron walls, corrugated iron roof). Because the construction materials had been purchased and gathered at the house building site, as soon as they arrived at the site, the members of the Team immediately started working. Depending on the expertise and health of each member, the Team assigned appropriate tasks. With the smooth work of nearly 10 members and the support of the homeowner, in the morning, Mr. Dong's house of more than 30 square meters was basically completed.
Mr. Huynh Van Dong shared that his family had no land to cultivate, lived mainly by working for hire, and had a poor economy . The old house was built of wood, the wooden floor was rotten and crooked, and there were no conditions to repair or rebuild it. With the help of the local government and the Dinh Yen Charity House Building Group No. 2, he had a new, solid house, and felt secure in working and developing the economy .
Mr. Huynh Phu Quan - Deputy Head of the Charity House Building Team No. 2 Dinh Yen, said: The team was established in 2016 until now, with more than 60 official members and 20 reserve members. Previously, the team specialized in building wooden charity houses. Later, the team "upgraded" to building wall houses and prefabricated houses for a longer "lifespan". Over the past 10 years, the Charity House Building Team No. 2 Dinh Yen has built over 1,280 houses (average support of 27 million VND/house) and participated in about 14,000 working days, contributing to eliminating temporary and dilapidated houses. “Not only do we contribute to building free houses for families in difficult circumstances, many members of the Group also support money to buy construction materials. The Group carefully conducts surveys and verifications to support the construction of houses for the right people; makes a list of contributions from benefactors, and publicizes income and expenditures, so they feel secure in supporting and sticking with the Group for many years. In 2025, the Group for Building Charity Houses No. 2 in Dinh Yen plans to build 120 charity houses, and has so far built 96 houses,” Mr. Huynh Phu Quan added.
The new house of Mrs. Pham Thi Thu Ha in Phong Hoa commune (Dong Thap province) was built with support from Lai Vung Volunteer Group.
Sharing the same vision of doing social charity work, Lai Vung Volunteer Group is also contributing to building solid and intact houses for the poor. Mr. Huynh Van Nhi - Head of Lai Vung Volunteer Group said that in the past 2 years, the Group has participated in many volunteer activities such as: mobilizing funds, coordinating with organizations and individuals to organize gift giving, medical examination and free medicine distribution for the poor; supporting necessities for areas affected by natural disasters, storms and floods and building houses for the poor. Since the beginning of 2025, the Group has supported the construction of nearly 20 houses for families with housing difficulties.
Ms. Pham Thi Thu Ha in Phong Hoa commune (Dong Thap province) was very excited to receive support from the local government and Lai Vung Volunteer Group to build a new house, worth more than 80 million VND. “The old house is almost collapsed but I don’t have money to repair it. I live alone, have no stable job and am not in good health. The economy is difficult, taking care of daily expenses is difficult so I don’t dare to think about rebuilding the house. Now, having a new house, I am very happy, it is like a dream” - Ms. Ha confided.
Besides the No. 2 Dinh Yen Charity House Building Team, Lai Vung Volunteer Group also has many other Charity House Building Teams such as: Tam Tu Charity House Building Team (Hong Ngu Ward); Wood Sawing Team to Build Charity Houses in Nam Hamlet (Tan Thanh Commune); Tan Thanh Charity House Building Team... Dong Thap has dozens of Charity House Building Teams with thousands of members. Most of them are honest, sincere farmers or freelance workers... who may not be rich financially but are rich in compassion.
For nearly 10 years, Mr. Le Van Nieu has been attached to the Charity House Building Team No. 2 Dinh Yen. Mr. Nieu confided that in the past, his family's economy was poor, their house was makeshift, and they were very afraid of heavy rain and strong winds, so he understood that suffering. Thanks to his hard work, his family's economy has improved. He tries to arrange for his family to join the Team to build sturdy, rain-proof and sun-proof houses for the poor. With each completed house, seeing the homeowner excited, he is also happy and that is the motivation for him to continue building houses for free with the members.
Charity House Building Teams and Groups actively participate in the Program to eliminate temporary and dilapidated houses in Dong Thap province with thousands of houses built and repaired. These are houses that ensure "3 hard" (hard floor, hard frame - wall, hard roof), with an average area of 30m2 or more. Depending on the actual conditions and characteristics of each locality, houses are built in the form of wall houses (tiled floor, walls, corrugated iron roof) or prefabricated houses (tiled floor, zinc pipe frame, corrugated iron wall, corrugated iron roof), or stilt houses (plank floor, wooden frame, corrugated iron wall, corrugated iron roof)...
According to Dong Thap Provincial Party Secretary Le Quoc Phong, in implementing the Program to eliminate temporary and dilapidated houses, the province has promoted the spirit of sharing and "mutual love" of the people; there are many ways to call for the companionship and support of society. In particular, the province has many models and many charity house building groups to support the construction of houses for the poor and people in difficult circumstances. The charity house building groups established by the locality or people or religious organizations operate very responsibly, wholeheartedly and wholeheartedly to help poor and near-poor households have a cozy house. Joining hands to support the poor is one of the "bright spots" in the socio-economic development process of Dong Thap.
