Besides in-person shopping, more and more consumers are choosing to shop for Tet online, from decorations and food to confectionery, causing a surge in orders during the Tet season.
However, domestic delivery capacity has not kept pace, leading to prolonged overload. As Tet (Lunar New Year) approaches this year, many consumers are anxious as their orders haven't arrived yet, while shipping companies are only a few days away from their Tet holiday, and their orders remain stuck in warehouses due to overload.
Ms. Mai Anh (Hoang Mai ward, Hanoi ) said she placed her order in mid-December but it's still sitting idle in the warehouse. "I'm preparing to go back to my hometown, but the order hasn't been delivered yet. I'm really anxious because these are all items I need for Tet," she said.
At many post offices, packages are piling up, blocking aisles, and orders are skyrocketing daily. To cope, many employees who previously only processed orders online now have to take on additional tasks such as receiving, sorting, and loading packages onto trucks.
Currently, all shipping companies have announced their Lunar New Year holiday schedules for the Year of the Horse. For example, Giao Hang Tiet Kiem and Viettel Post have announced holidays starting from February 15th (the 28th day of the 12th lunar month); Giao Hang Nhanh, J&T Express, SPX Express, etc., will be closed from February 16th (the 29th day of the 12th lunar month).
According to reports, many shop owners in Hanoi have stopped accepting deliveries to other provinces and cities since the 20th day of the 12th lunar month to ensure goods reach customers before Tet (Lunar New Year). Ms. Thuy Dung, the owner of a clothing store in Hai Ba Trung ward, Hanoi, said that from the 20th day of the 12th lunar month, she only accepts express deliveries within Hanoi and sells directly at her store until the 27th day of the 12th lunar month.

"Many customers have been messaging and calling to inquire about the status, but the store can only update information based on the shipping company's tracking number. Due to the high volume of orders, the shipping company is overloaded, and many deliveries within the city take 4-5 days to arrive," she said.
In contrast to the overloaded domestic shipping situation, many consumers were surprised that cross-border delivery times were faster than domestic orders. Ms. Phan Quynh (Thanh Xuan ward, Hanoi) said that she recently placed an order from China on an e-commerce platform and it only took a little over 3 days to arrive in Vietnam.
Meanwhile, another order she placed with a store in downtown Hanoi is still showing "ready for delivery" at the warehouse even after five days. "Learning from previous years, this year I made a list of the items I needed to buy and proactively placed my orders early. I ordered some items in the city center for express delivery, but some late orders haven't arrived yet," she said.
