Currently, thousands of bee colonies are in Thanh Ha land making honey.

OCOP products

At this time of year, thousands of bee colonies from far away come to the lychee land to make honey. Not only are there large bee farms, Thanh Ha also has many beekeeping households.

Ms. Le Thi Quyen, owner of Diep Quyen honey facility with more than 30 years of experience in beekeeping, said that at first, her family only had a few beekeeping boxes, mainly collecting lychee honey in March. After the lychee season, there were no more flowers, and beekeepers had to buy sugar to feed the bees. Later, she and her husband bred bee colonies to go to many places in the country to make honey according to the flower season. In early March, all 1,500 bee colonies of her family returned to Thanh Ha to prepare for the new honey season. Ms. Quyen shared: “Being a beekeeper requires perseverance and understanding the characteristics of bees. If you do not take care of them properly, the bees will abandon the nest and go away. There were times when they went away in groups of dozens.”

To maintain the bee colony, the couple had to hire experts to guide them in raising them. Later, when they became professional beekeepers, the couple took the initiative to separate and regroup the bees, protecting their health. When the volume of honey collected reached hundreds of tons each year (including lychee honey, wild flower honey) and bee products such as pollen, royal jelly), the owner of the facility wanted to build a stable and sustainable brand.

In 2022, Thanh Ha lychee honey, golden drops of Diep Quyen beekeeping facility, will be certified as a 3-star OCOP product. To achieve this, Ms. Quyen's family always puts product quality first. The facility makes pure honey, without impurities, and is certified to meet food safety conditions. Ms. Quyen said that in 2025, she will register to build a 4-star OCOP for honey. From now until then, she will focus on researching and designing packaging for each product.

As an early adopter of honey exports, Mr. Le Quy Quyet, Director of Phuong Bac Trading and Service Company Limited (Thanh Ha) quickly realized the importance of participating in the development of OCOP products. Therefore, when the specialized departments introduced the OCOP development process, Mr. Quyet actively followed the instructions. Mr. Quyet said: “The company’s honey products have been certified as 3-star OCOP. This is like a passport to help businesses more easily trade and consume honey abroad.”

Nearly 2,000 bee colonies of Phuong Bac Trading and Service Company Limited are now present in Thanh Ha, and will collect honey until the end of March.

Thanh Ha lychee honey achieves 3-star OCOP certification

Honey from Phuong Bac Trading and Service Company Limited has been exported to the US thanks to its quality and brand. According to Mr. Quyet, at first, honey was only sold domestically. After that, the volume of honey increased because he raised many bee colonies. The demand for product output prompted him to research, link up with many businesses and export lychee honey. Each year, the company exports about 1,000 tons of honey to the US, with revenue reaching about 60 billion VND. To export honey to the US for a long time, after harvesting, the honey will be processed through a water-cooling machine (vacuum separation technology, helping the product retain its beautiful color without losing its value). Before exporting, honey samples are sent for testing at a German company.

Currently, Thanh Ha lychee honey is sold in many supermarkets and OCOP product stores nationwide. In the journey to build honey into an OCOP product, the subjects are constantly improving the quality, finding a place for their brand.

According to the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Thanh Ha district, when the subject is conscious of building OCOP products, it is easy for the management agencies to orient the development. These products when put on the market already have a brand and reputation. Both exported and widely sold in many supermarkets, Thanh Ha lychee honey is also a product chosen as a gift by many agencies and units inside and outside the province.

In order for Thanh Ha's lychee honey products to be "elevated", in the coming time, the district's specialized agencies will continue to coordinate with the subjects to actively bring the products to participate in trade promotion activities. In 2023, Thanh Ha district will support 20 million VND/file for OCOP products. The locality encourages subjects to participate in e-commerce platforms to connect and promote lychee honey, thereby spreading the typical products from Thanh Ha lychee.
