Currently, An Cuong village (Van Tuong commune, Quang Ngai province) has about 400 households fishing near the shore using basket boats. Near-shore fishing helps local fishermen earn 300,000-500,000 VND per day.
Fishermen in An Cuong village use a 3-layer net 2 nautical miles (about 3.7km) from shore to catch fish. Each fisherman casts 600-700m of net at sea. The net will be collected in a basket and brought to shore to remove the fish. This type of net has 3 layers so it can catch many different types of fish, big and small. Because the net has many layers, removing the fish takes a lot of time.
According to fishermen, fishing near shore using basket boats is risky, especially when the sea is rough. Small fishing baskets are often overturned by waves, endangering their lives . Fishermen often have to go out to sea before dawn to be able to get back to shore to sell fish to traders to take to markets. On a normal day, fishermen here earn 300,000-500,000 VND, and on days when there are many fish, it can be up to 1 million VND .
According to the representative of Van Tuong Commune People's Committee, most of the people in An Cuong village are engaged in nearshore fishing to earn a living. Although this job is hard and dangerous, it brings a stable source of income for local fishermen.
