Readers have undoubtedly been moved more than once by literary works about dogs, such as *The Call of the Wild* (Jack London), *The Dog of Flanders* (Ouida), or *The Little Dog with the Basket of Roses* (Nguyen Nhat Anh). While Jack London writes about Buck's journey back to his wild instincts to explore the limits of survival, and Nguyen Nhat Anh conveys a message of love and responsibility through the narrative of the dog Beto, Vu Ngoc Giao's novel * Sleep, Harry!* touches readers with a story steeped in affection and humanity.
Pages of a life of hardship and struggle.
From the very first pages, readers are drawn into the turbulent life of the main character – the dog Harry. With a poignant tone and a well-structured plot, the novel unfolds a heartbreaking fate: from a dog once loved and pampered, Harry is unexpectedly abandoned when his owners' family has to relocate abroad.
The three stages of the brave dog's life are associated with three names: Harry, Tangerine, and Win. While the early days after leaving his mother's embrace were fortunate and peaceful, the subsequent stages were filled with bitterness. Yet, amidst the storms, Harry remains a gentle, loyal, and resilient dog. Throughout the work, readers recognize in Harry his self-respect, courage, and remarkable independence.
From the day he was abandoned, Harry became an outcast. He had to fend for himself, often having to compete with other humans for food, enduring beatings and cold rejection from people. Those days of hunger and homelessness had stained Harry's once pristine white fur, meticulously cared for, with dirt and grime from the road.

The novel " Go to Sleep, Harry!" by writer Vu Ngoc Giao (Dan Tri Publishing House, May 2026)
Then, luck smiled upon Harry one afternoon when he met an old street vendor. She took him to live in her small house in a poor working-class neighborhood. From a starving stray dog, Harry was reborn with a new life and a new name: Tangerine – simple yet endearing. With her, he gradually adapted to the hard work of making a living. Every afternoon, he would trail behind her as she sold her goods, walking beside her shoulders, bent under the weight of her hot tofu. Her familiar calls resonated deeply in his mind, reminding him of the value of hard work and perseverance.
But that peace didn't last. The old woman suddenly fell ill and was rushed to the hospital. That night, Harry waited anxiously for her. As the night wore on, his worry turned into panic, urging him to search for her. Lost, Harry fell into the hands of villains and was taken straight to a slaughterhouse. This is perhaps the most haunting chapter, as he is forced to witness his kind being dragged away one by one, the screams of terror echoing amidst the smell of blood and the cold, cruel indifference of humans. In the moment he saw an opportunity to escape, Harry acted recklessly. However, because of his species' instincts and sense of justice, he was pulled back, trapped right at the threshold of freedom.
With love and empathy, writer Vu Ngoc Giao arranged for the intelligent dog to meet the boy, Mit. From there, Harry embarked on a new chapter in his life with a different name: Win. Taken in by Mit and his father, he not only found his home again but also rediscovered the meaning of belonging. He continued to work diligently and live devotedly as a true member of that small family.
One day, while walking with Mít through familiar streets, Harry suddenly saw the old house, now owned by someone else. He paused, a pang of sadness in his heart, then quietly turned away. And on that fateful afternoon, Harry met his beloved grandmother again…
Time passed, and she grew weaker and eventually passed away. After bidding her farewell, Harry had also grown old. He was taken to an animal shelter and once again found refuge under the care of a kind-hearted young woman. In his final years, Harry was blind and frail. The author concludes the story with a heartwarming ending: his former owner returns, searches tirelessly, and finally reunites with Harry. That is also the moment the loyal dog bids farewell to this world, dying in the arms of his former owner.
A profound humanistic lesson that awakens compassion.
The writer Nguyen Dinh Thi once wrote: "A good literary work will have the effect of awakening people, making them clearly see their own souls, and truly find themselves." Indeed, Vu Ngoc Giao's novel, *Sleep, Harry!*, powerfully stirs the consciousness of humanity through the harsh stages of life and the poignant questions raised by an intelligent, self-respecting, and courageous dog. The work is also a hymn to the compassion of poor working people – those who sweat to make a living but still maintain kindness in their hearts. At the same time, the story celebrates the innocent beauty of childhood, when children, even in affluent circumstances, know how to love and protect little creatures.

With deep love and empathy, Vu Ngoc Giao embodies the character of a dog to recount the poignant ups and downs of life. "Sleep, Harry!" is not just a story about the fate of an abandoned animal, but also carries a social and ecological critique: sometimes, in the pursuit of survival, humans inadvertently push nature into a position of opposition to themselves. The work also speaks out against the erosion of kindness, while simultaneously inspiring a message of living honestly, chivalrously, with self-respect, appreciating hard work, and respecting all living things.
With its simple yet moving writing style, skillful use of personification and metaphor, and subtle understanding of animal behavior, *Sleep, Harry!* (Dan Tri Publishing House, 2026) shows a new step forward in Vu Ngoc Giao's writing. This is a book for all ages, to read and to pause for reflection.
