Increase meat production of livestock and poultry for sale

One of the key economic development areas of the people of Nam Can commune (Ky Son) is raising buffalo, cows and goats. To serve the Lunar New Year market, from the beginning of the year, the people here have planned to increase their livestock. Mr. Moong Van Chum in Khanh Thanh village, Nam Can commune is the same. In his farm, Mr. Chum usually maintains a herd of 30 buffaloes and cows and a herd of 80 - 150 goats depending on the time.

Mr. Chum said that from September 2023, he will stop retailing buffalo and cows to focus on taking care of and preparing "goods" to sell near Tet. Mr. Ho Ba Po - Chairman of the Farmers' Association of Nam Can commune said that, like Mr. Chum's family, livestock and poultry farmers in the commune are also focusing on taking care of livestock to serve the Tet market. The whole Nam Can commune has a total herd of more than 3,000 buffalo and cows, of which Khanh Thanh village alone has more than 800 buffalo and cows, about 200 more than the average for the year.

In the whole province, by November 2023, the total herd of buffalo and cows is estimated at 800,460, an increase of 3.12% over the same period. The total herd of pigs is estimated at 988,625, an increase of 3.35% over the same period. The total herd of poultry is estimated at 32,618 thousand, an increase of 7.82% over the same period.

According to the Provincial Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine, it is currently the time when livestock farmers are actively taking care of their livestock. It is expected that by the end of the year, the total herd of buffaloes and cows will reach 805 thousand heads, the herd of pigs will reach 1.05 million heads and the total herd of poultry will reach about 34 million heads. The total output of fresh meat for slaughter in the first 10 months of 2023 is estimated at 238 thousand tons, an increase of 3.36% over the same period, milk output will reach 240 thousand tons. With increased supply, it is expected that the whole year's output of fresh meat for slaughter will reach 285 thousand tons - reaching 100% of the plan, and fresh milk output will reach 280 thousand tons compared to the plan of 265 thousand tons.

Currently, the selling price of livestock products on the market is unstable. The price of live pigs fluctuates from 50,000 to 52,000 VND/kg, the price of chicken at the farm is from 52,000 to 55,000 VND/kg, the price of chicken eggs is 2,000 to 2,400 VND/egg, the price of live cattle (laisind cattle) is 67,000 to 70,000 VND/kg, the price of 3B cattle is from 80,000 to 82,000 VND/kg.

There are currently 970 livestock farms in the province (according to the scale of the Law on Livestock). Specifically, pig farms: 438 farms, including 24 large-scale farms, 75 medium-scale farms and 339 small-scale farms; cow farms: 50 farms, including 4 large-scale farms, 14 medium-scale farms and 32 small-scale farms; poultry farms: 482 farms, including 332 chicken farms (73 medium-scale farms, 259 small-scale farms) and 150 duck farms (45 medium-scale farms, 105 small-scale farms).

According to the provincial Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine, based on the total herd and expected output of fresh meat for slaughter in 2023, the livestock industry has proactively guided localities to increase and restore herds to ensure sufficient food supply for consumption in the last months of 2023, especially during the 2024 Lunar New Year.

It is expected that the output of livestock products produced in the last two months of the year and January 2024 will be about 57,000 tons, milk output 70,000 tons and egg output 180 million eggs. It is forecasted that the price of livestock products during the Lunar New Year 2024 will only increase slightly by 10-15% because consumption will not increase dramatically compared to demand and there will be no shortage of livestock products to serve consumers.

Tighten disease prevention

In addition to being ready to supply livestock products, farmers also actively and strictly comply with regulations on disease prevention and control for livestock and poultry. In the immediate future, the source of spread must be limited and the livestock that has not been infected with the disease must be prevented.

In Do Luong district, by mid-November 2023, there were 17 outbreaks of African swine fever that had not passed 21 days. The locality is actively preventing the spread and zoning off the epidemic. The leader of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Do Luong district said that since the first outbreak, the district had established a steering group for epidemic prevention and control, regularly checking the work of preventing and controlling cold and epidemics for livestock and poultry to prevent the source of infection. The total output of fresh meat of all kinds for slaughter in the first 10 months of 2023 is estimated at 24,000 tons, an increase of 1.10% compared to 2022. According to the Provincial Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine, the disease situation in livestock and poultry from the beginning of 2023 to now has been complicated, especially African swine fever, avian influenza, rabies; white spot disease, acute hepatopancreatic necrosis, microsporidia in shrimp farmed in households and aquaculture. Specifically, currently, African swine fever is occurring in 93 outbreaks in small-scale farms that have not passed 21 days in 15 districts and towns. The total number of dead pigs that had to be destroyed was 3,524, equivalent to a total weight of 201,425 kg, of which 749 sows, 2,016 porkers, and 752 piglets. The total number of pigs destroyed in 2023 is about 0.7% of the total herd.

However, the epidemic situation in livestock and poultry is gradually being controlled. Compared to the same period in 2022, the number of outbreaks decreased by 19.4%, the number of pigs culled at outbreaks decreased by 11.1%. Many localities have done a good job of preventing and controlling epidemics, with a high vaccination rate for livestock of 60-80% such as Do Luong, Nam Dan, Nghia Dan, Hung Nguyen, and Cua Lo Town.

In addition, disease prevention and control work must be tightened and violations must be strictly handled. By November 2023, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development inspectors had fined 5 cases of violations of regulations on animal husbandry and veterinary medicine, with a fine of 56 million VND. The Department's leaders also requested localities to monitor and closely follow the situation, promptly report unusual developments of livestock and poultry diseases for timely handling. Pay attention to detecting and strictly handling cases of dumping infected animal carcasses into the environment.
