On November 28, we returned to Vinh Xuan village, Tuy An Tay commune, Dak Lak , a week after the terrifying night that forced 35 households to flee.
The weather was dry, the sun was hot, the village road was dry, but the scene before our eyes was still terrifying. cracks Running across the garden, the concrete path heaved and heaved, the earth rising in patches. From the cracks, water dripped onto the ground, mixing with the hardened dust to form cold puddles.

Ms. Pham Thi Man, the owner of a newly built, solid house in the middle of the village, which had not yet been inaugurated, stood stunned beside the house's foundation, which had sunk nearly half a meter deep. Before that terrible night (November 19), her family's house was praised as the most beautiful in the village, and everyone was eagerly waiting for the housewarming party. However, the natural disaster took everything away.
She said, her voice still trembling when recalling the terrifying moment: “Those days it rained heavily and continuously. On the afternoon of November 19, I discovered that there was water in the floor of the house, even though it was tiled; and then the wall of the house showed signs of separating from the yard, creating a gap.
By evening the gap got bigger. When it got dark, we started hearing "bang bang" noises from under the floor. Then "crack" noises from the walls...

She thought it was just a few loose bricks. But in just a few seconds, the floor of her house shook, then suddenly slid down with a "bang". At the same time, cracked wall from ceiling to floor, plaster pieces fell clattering, bricks flew off...
The little girl screamed in fear, she just had time to hug her child and run outside.
"At that moment, I felt the ground sinking under my feet, and cold water gushed out from the cracks. All around us, it seemed like the whole land was shaking as if it wanted to swallow us." she recalled in shock.

Next to that, Mr. Pham Van Tho's house also had a similar phenomenon. Although it had not completely collapsed, the house was full of cracks.
"My house was a little bit worse, but the phenomenon was the same. The house shook with a loud bang due to the ground collapsing, then there was a continuous "crackling" sound due to cracked bricks. At that time, the whole family was just worried about running away and didn't care about their property at all." he sighed
He pulled his wife out, trying to hold on to each other, walking slowly, because the ground under his feet shook, pieces of it bounced up as if it wanted to sink her.
"I never thought in my life I would see such a horrible scene," He said and affirmed that if it rained more or shook more, his house would collapse completely.

Mr. Tho's house wall is cracked, the garden is also full of cracks from the ground.
Mr. Nguyen Xuan Nghat, who lives at the beginning of the village, recalls the terrifying moment when the back part of his house was lifted off the foundation, floating in the air.
“Hearing the sound of “crack… pole…”, I went to the back to see and saw the back part of the house lifted off the foundation, floating in mid-air. Under my feet, the ground shook, pieces of it bounced up, water sprayed from the cracks. At that moment, I knew that if I didn’t run away immediately, I might be buried.” Mr. Ngát recounted.
The whole village ran that night, not having time to take anything with them. Furniture, rice, tables, chairs, wardrobes... everything was left behind. The rumbling sound of explosions came from underground, walls shook, foundations rose, water gushed from cracks, creating the feeling that the earth wanted to swallow everything.

The next morning, when people returned, the scene was nothing but rubble. Mrs. Man’s house had only an open foundation, long cracks in the walls, and broken tiles. Mr. Tho’s house, once a large garden, now had jagged long cracks. The part of Mr. Ngát’s house that had been lifted off the foundation now lay tilted, motionless. Everything was buried in the dry, hard soil, lost.
Around the village, hundreds of cracks ran across the gardens, the concrete roads were sagging, water from the cracks sprayed onto the house floors and the ground, creating a strange and creepy scene. People stood watching, their hands shaking, their eyes fixed on each crack, helpless.
A week passed, and the horror was still fresh. People had lost their homes and possessions, and the entire village felt as if it had been engulfed in “hell”. Every crack and puddle of water gushing from the ground reminded them that the natural disaster had not let up, and that at any moment, the earth could “get angry” again.

Desolate scene in Vinh Xuan village.
Mr. Phan Quang Phi - Chairman of Tuy An Tay Commune People's Committee said that in addition to 35 households in Vinh Xuan village, some other villages also recorded houses that collapsed and cracked, making them uninhabitable. Most of the households have moved to their relatives' houses to live, about 6 households are staying at the village cultural house. Through the survey, people want to be resettled near the old area for convenience in labor and agricultural production. | |
