Water supply system is seriously damaged

After the floodwaters receded, the Thac Ngua spillway (between Khanh Vinh and Tay Khanh Vinh communes) was reopened to traffic. We went to Hon Du village, Tay Khanh Vinh commune - an area that had been isolated for many days during the recent flood. Right at the Thac Ngua spillway, the floodwaters receded, revealing a section of the water supply pipe from Khanh Vinh commune to Tay Khanh Vinh commune that had been broken by the floodwaters and thrown onto the edge of the bridge. Many people in Hon Du village brought blankets, mosquito nets, and clothes here to wash, even though the river water was still quite murky.

According to the reporter's records, in addition to the above-mentioned tap water pipeline destroyed by floodwaters, other self-flowing domestic water supply systems in Tay Khanh Vinh commune, including: Giang Ly domestic water system; Da Ram, Suoi Cat water system; Ta Goc domestic water system; A Xay domestic water system, were all broken in many sections and deeply buried by rocks and soil, blocking the source.

Similarly, the self-flowing domestic water systems in Nam Khanh Vinh commune were also severely damaged. Of which, the domestic water systems of Son Thai commune (old) and Lien Sang commune (old) suffered 70-90% damage. Particularly, the two domestic water systems of Cau Ba commune (old) and Khanh Thanh commune (old) were not yet put into operation but were also seriously damaged in the flood.

Mr. Nguyen Hoang Tuan - manager and accountant of Nam Khanh Vinh Commune Water Plant Management Board said: "Currently, the unit is coordinating with the Economic Department of Nam Khanh Vinh Commune to conduct a survey to develop a plan to repair the water supply systems in the area because the repair cost is very large, beyond the unit's capacity. Along with that, in the past few days, the unit has proactively repaired the main pipelines that were slightly damaged, as well as the secondary pipelines to households. As for the pipes of the domestic water system of Son Thai commune (old) along Khanh Le pass and the source point, the unit is currently unable to access because the volume of landslides and rocks buried there is very large and in many places".

Efforts to overcome

When the water supply system was paralyzed, local people encountered many difficulties in their daily lives and they tried every way to have water for daily use in the near future, especially for daily meals, such as: Storing rainwater, asking for water in Khanh Vinh commune... Mr. Ha Uong (Da Ban village, Nam Khanh Vinh commune) said: "During the flood, my house was flooded up to the roof, luckily we were able to move in time so everyone was safe. But all the furniture in the house was washed away and damaged, even 3 large pigs that had not been sold were also washed away. When we returned home, there was no shortage of food and supplies, but the worst thing was the lack of water for eating and drinking, sometimes having to eat raw instant noodles. When I ran out of rainwater, today I went to my friend's house in town (Nam Khanh Vinh commune) to ask for 2 cans of water to use." After work in the morning in Khanh Vinh commune, even though she was in a hurry to pick up her child, Ms. Pham Thi Hanh (Hon Du hamlet, Tay Khanh Vinh commune) still had to stay behind to ask for a can of water to bring home for cooking. “For the past week, every day I go to work, I bring an empty can to ask for water to bring home for use. The water supply system is severely damaged, I think it will take a long time to fix it” - Ms. Hanh shared.

As for the people of Hon Du village, the problem of domestic water in the past few days has been less severe, because in the village there is a volunteer who carries clean water to support each house, that is Mr. Nguyen Van Hoi. Mr. Hoi said: "Seeing that the people do not have water to eat and drink, I used a rickshaw to carry a 1m3 water tank to get water from the well of my sister's house in A Xay village and then transport it to the people in the village. My family has 2 rickshaws, but only 1 water tank, so my younger brother and I take turns driving day and night to supply water to the people."

Mr. Nguyen Van Sy - Vice Chairman of Tay Khanh Vinh Commune People's Committee said that in the recent flood, the area suffered a lot of damage, although the local force was thin, the locality has made efforts to overcome step by step, from traffic roads, lighting, communication... In particular, the A Xay domestic water system has been repaired, but because the upstream water is still turbid, people can only use it for bathing and washing, not for drinking. For the remaining self-flowing domestic water systems, the locality continues to focus on repairing them so that people can soon have clean water for daily use again, stabilizing their lives.
