About 220 residents living near Norway's Orland Air Base have filed a lawsuit against the government over the noise they have to endure from fighter jets. In the lawsuit, they say the noise has gotten worse since the Norwegian Air Force replaced its F-16 fleet with F-35s.
Residents say the noise is affecting their health and causing financial losses. They argue that the value of their properties in the area has dropped significantly since the Orland air base became home to the new F-35 squadron. Norway has purchased a total of 52 new F-35 fighter jets, marking the largest defense purchase in the country’s history.
According to a local lawyer, the average resident has asked the government for more than $76,000 in compensation. However, the request has been rejected. The Norwegian Defense Infrastructure Agency said that according to its survey, the value of real estate near the air base has actually increased, not decreased.
