Man killed by leopard attack

A 45-year-old man has died after being attacked by a leopard in Pauri, Uttaranchal state, India.

The horrific incident occurred on December 4 in Gajald village, Uttar Pradesh, India, when Rajendra Nautiyal, 45, was on his way home when he was suddenly attacked by a leopard and dragged into nearby bushes, NDTV reported.

Upon receiving the information, police and rangers quickly arrived at the scene. The victim's body was found.

Authorities have given permission to shoot the animal to ensure public safety. Schools in the area have been closed for two days.

"All private and public schools in the area will be closed on December 5 and 6 as a precautionary measure," a local official said.

Officials also visited the family and expressed their condolences. Forest Department officials said the family will receive an ex-gratia of Rs 10 lakh.

Following the incident, people were advised to stay away from forested areas at dawn and dusk, carry flashlights, sticks and travel in groups.

India Times quoted forest rangers as saying that in recent weeks, leopard attacks in Koti and Pokhra have left two women dead and a four-year-old boy with head injuries.

According to Forest Department data, more than 10 people have been killed in leopard attacks in Uttarakhand state this year.
