The patient, Mr. LVH (44 years old, residing in Soc Trang ), was transferred to the local hospital for emergency treatment with a foreign object in his neck, a 24cm long metal pair of scissors, and a penetrating wound in his abdomen of about 2cm.
X-ray and CT scan results showed a metallic foreign body penetrating the middle of the D1 thoracic spine. The patient was scheduled for emergency surgery to remove the foreign body and explore the spinal cord injury.
After the 2 hour and 30 minute microsurgery, the general surgery team continued to perform laparotomy to check for undamaged organs, clean the abdominal cavity...
As of the morning of February 21, the patient was awake, responsive, had a dry surgical wound, no fever, no limb weakness, and was being treated and cared for at the Orthopedic Trauma Center.
Mr. H's health has stabilized.
Dr. Huynh Thong Em, Director of the Orthopedic Trauma Center of Can Tho Central General Hospital, said that this was a difficult surgery because the foreign object was small, deeply embedded, and penetrated into dangerous locations in the cervical spine, joint space, and near the esophagus, trachea, and carotid artery.
Fortunately, in this patient's case, the foreign object did not penetrate nearby vital organs such as blood vessels, trachea, esophagus, etc.
According to NLĐ, Mr. H. has been blind for about 10 years, is addicted to alcohol and then used scissors to stab himself in the neck.
