On April 28, Hoan My Binh Phuoc Hospital announced that it had successfully performed an endoscopy to remove a foreign object, a denture, from a 56-year-old man. The man accidentally swallowed it down his throat while taking medication.
According to Hoan My Binh Phuoc Hospital, on the same afternoon, the hospital admitted a male patient named BTT (56 years old, residing in Dong Xoai City, Binh Phuoc) to the emergency room in critical condition, with sore throat, continuous vomiting, drooling and chest pain.
Doctors perform endoscopy and remove dentures from patient's throat
According to the patient's family, Mr. T. accidentally swallowed his dentures while taking medication.
Upon receiving the information, doctors from the Emergency Department of Hoan My Binh Phuoc Hospital determined that the patient had a foreign object stuck in his throat and ordered an endoscopy and emergency anesthesia to remove the object.
Doctor K'Lieu, who directly performed the endoscopy, said that the foreign object was located horizontally, making it difficult to operate. The foreign object was located in the upper third of the esophagus, easily causing complications and damaging other parts of the esophagus. However, after performing a number of operations, the endoscopy was successful after about 20 minutes. The foreign object removed was a denture measuring about 2x4 cm.
After successfully removing the foreign object, the patient's condition was stable, there was no esophageal bleeding, no complications were detected and he was discharged from the hospital immediately afterwards.
Denture foreign body after being successfully removed
According to Hoan My Binh Phuoc Hospital, choking on foreign objects is a common occurrence in daily life, especially when eating and drinking. When swallowing dentures, the denture hook usually gets stuck in the narrow area of the esophagus near the chest, where there are many large blood vessels. The patient can die at any time if the iron hook punctures a large blood vessel, causing massive bleeding. In addition, if the patient is hospitalized late, the iron hook can cause damage and infection in the middle of the chest, which can lead to death due to severe septic shock.
