From 10 December 2025, Australians under the age of 16 will no longer be allowed to have social media accounts. Before that, Apple has rolled out tools on the App Store to help developers ensure their apps comply with the new law.

According to Apple, developers are still directly responsible for complying with regulations, but Apple offers a variety of support features, including:
Age Declaration API: This is a tool that allows developers to identify and tailor app experiences based on a user's age. For example, developers can request age confirmation for those under 16 and restrict access or features in their app accordingly.
App Store App Descriptions: Developers are required to include age-appropriate details in their app descriptions. This helps users understand whether an app is appropriate for them and can highlight age restrictions on social media.
In-app controls on App Store product pages: Apple has updated its mandatory age assessment questionnaire, adding questions related to in-app controls, including age verification and parental controls. Apps that use the age assurance API can display this information directly on their App Store product pages.
Higher minimum age rating: Developers can set a higher age rating than the original recommendation based on the review questionnaire in App Store Connect. This helps the app meet legal requirements in each region.
Age Appropriate URL: When updating age ratings, developers can add a URL that links to a dedicated website that provides details about the content and age requirements. This feature allows for greater transparency, for example, highlighting the ban on people under 16 owning social media accounts in Australia.
With these tools, Apple hopes to help developers make the necessary changes before the new law takes effect, while also protecting minors from inappropriate social media use.
