On January 14th, Quang Binh Friendship Hospital ( Quang Tri province) reported that its doctors had recently admitted and treated a woman who suffered necrosis in her back due to self-treating boils with a traditional herbal poultice.

After treatment, the necrotic area shrank and showed signs of good recovery.
Previously, Ms. NTM (69 years old, residing in Phong Nha commune, Quang Tri province) was hospitalized with high fever, fatigue, and severe back pain. Clinical tests and examinations revealed signs of a severe infection.
According to Dr. Vo Nhat Nam, from the Department of Surgery - Anesthesia and Resuscitation, examination revealed a severe necrotic lesion measuring approximately 4x4cm, with a highly inflamed area of about 10x10cm at high risk of necrosis. There is a risk of the infection spreading, leading to sepsis and serious consequences, affecting the function of the heart, liver, and kidneys…
Upon taking her medical history, Mrs. M. stated that she had developed boils on her back several days prior to hospitalization. She had visited a local health center and received antibiotics. However, after two days, she stopped taking the medication on her own and applied herbal poultices based on anecdotal evidence.
Ms. M. stated that the leaves and ingredients used included hibiscus leaves, kalanchoe leaves, mimosa leaves, mui leaves, wind tree leaves (local name), garlic, and coarse salt. She crushed them all into a paste and applied it directly to the boils.
Just two days after the compress was applied, the area on the back developed widespread swelling, ulceration, excessive fluid discharge, and intense pain radiating throughout the back. Seeing the symptoms worsening, the family took the patient to the hospital for treatment.
At the hospital, the patient was treated with broad-spectrum antibiotics to combat infection and underwent surgical debridement and drainage of pus. After a period of close monitoring and intensive care, the patient's vital signs are now stable, and the wound is showing signs of good healing.
Dr. Vo Nhat Nam advises people against using unproven, anecdotal methods to treat illnesses. Inappropriate methods and medications can worsen the condition, endanger health, and even be life-threatening. If symptoms worsen, seek prompt medical attention at a healthcare facility for examination and treatment.
