Kyra Dawson, 31, from Essex, England, weighed more than 114kg and had been an alcoholic for many years. After realizing her drinking habits were out of control, she decided to change and lost 57kg - half her body weight - without using diet pills.
A self-described “party animal,” Kyra says she drank wine and vodka throughout her 20s. “At one point, I was ordering five takeout meals a day. I would eat all day and then drink at night—repeat the cycle,” she says.
According to the Daily Mail, Kyra's binge eating habits included a greasy English breakfast, fried chicken for lunch, takeaway pizza for dinner and snacks like sausage sandwiches in between meals, all accompanied by alcohol. She started drinking regularly at the age of 15 but didn't realise she had a problem until she hit rock bottom.
“At first I didn’t think there was anything wrong with me. I just thought I liked to go out. But while my friends were just drinking a few soft drinks, I was turning to vodka,” Kyra recalls.
The decision to give up alcohol was a major turning point for her both physically and mentally. “As soon as I stopped drinking, the weight dropped off. I no longer craved greasy food. Alcohol is high in sugar – I lost almost 25 kg just by stopping drinking,” the young woman said.
Kyra attributes her weight and alcoholism to a difficult childhood and the shock of her adoptive mother dying of cancer-related sepsis in 2018. She was adopted at age 10, after a long period in foster care.
“I lost my mother right after my birthday. It was so sudden, she passed away in my arms. I partied even harder. When I wasn’t drinking, I was eating fast food, junk food – anything to help me forget the pain,” she said.
Admitting she had a problem was the hardest part. The first step to change came when she met her ex-boyfriend in August 2020 and decided to stop drinking and binge eating.
However, the biggest turning point came when Kyra discovered she was pregnant with her son, Reo, now 3, five months after quitting drinking. “My son saved my life. I wanted to be better for him, to make sure he didn’t have the same childhood I had. He gave me a reason to live and I promised to be everything he needed,” she confided.
The young mother gradually replaced fatty meals with healthy foods such as yogurt and fruit for breakfast, salad for lunch, chicken or fish with rice and vegetables for dinner. Kyra also started taking long walks, dancing, aiming for 10,000 steps a day and signing up for a gym to maintain her weight.
The mental shift also had a profound impact on her life, helping her open up to seek help and reconnect with family and friends. “Dancing was my therapy through dark times, good for my body and my mind,” Kyra said.
Kyra has lost a total of 120 pounds and now weighs around 130 pounds. She urges anyone struggling with self-destructive habits like alcoholism or binge eating to seek help.
“I hope that someone who reads my story will take something positive from it. It is very important to join a support group when you are recovering from alcoholism. It is very difficult to do it alone and I have received help from the group. You can always turn your life around with the right help,” she said.
