On the morning of January 22nd, Thuy Duyen's family flower shop on Thanh Thai Street (Ho Chi Minh City) was bustling with people buying chrysanthemum plants to help rescue farmers in the Mekong Delta. The potted flowers were at their most beautiful, displaying a vibrant yellow color, even though the Lunar New Year of the Horse was still nearly a month away.
Ms. Duyen said that if the flowers bloomed about two weeks later, each pot with a flower canopy measuring over a meter would sell for 150,000 - 180,000 VND/pot. However, because the Tet flowers bloomed early this year, they are currently being sold for 120,000 VND/pot.
Flower shops in Ho Chi Minh City are boosting sales of chrysanthemums for Tet (Vietnamese Lunar New Year).
"My hometown is Sa Dec flower village in Dong Thap province. Every year, our family imports many kinds of flowers to Ho Chi Minh City to sell during Tet, but this year we are prioritizing chrysanthemum flowers. For about 10 days now, we have sold about 100 pots each day and will continue to import more to help rescue the farmers," Ms. Duyen said.
Located more than 10 km from the city center, Nguyen Van Trong, an employee at Hue flower shop in alley 965 on Quang Trung Street, said that the current price of early-blooming chrysanthemums is 120,000 - 140,000 VND, about 100,000 VND cheaper than last year's Tet. As for chrysanthemums with buds, ready to bloom just in time for the Lunar New Year, the price is around 180,000 VND per pot.
Mr. Trong said that this year, chrysanthemums from the Mekong Delta bloomed early, so his shop is boosting sales to serve people in Ho Chi Minh City who want to decorate for Tet (Lunar New Year) early. His shop imports large quantities from flower gardens in Sa Dec (Dong Thap) and Cho Lach ( Vinh Long ) villages.

Everyone lend a hand to support farmers in the Mekong Delta.
According to Thanh Nien newspaper reporters , many shops in Ho Chi Minh City are currently boosting sales of chrysanthemum plants to support farmers in the Mekong Delta. Accordingly, agencies and shops have begun purchasing large quantities to decorate for Tet (Lunar New Year). These days, many chrysanthemum pots are placed in front of houses on the streets of Ho Chi Minh City, giving many people the feeling that Tet has arrived earlier this year.
Many customers who stopped by to buy flowers said they heard that the chrysanthemum flowers in the Mekong Delta bloomed early this year, causing difficulties for farmers, so they bought them to show their support.
Teacher Thanh Thuy from Vuon Lai ward (formerly District 10) visited a flower shop on the morning of January 22nd to choose a pair of chrysanthemum pots and said: "My hometown is in the former Ben Tre province, now part of Vinh Long province, where the famous Cho Lach flower village is located. Hearing that farmers are facing difficulties because the flowers bloomed early, my family bought 4 pots to display for Tet. Today, I bought 2 more pots to put in the classroom. Each person contributes a little, hoping the farmers will sell all their stock soon."
