For the generation of Party members who grew up amidst the bombs and bullets of war, most of us thought about and understood revolutionary ethics as being ready to overcome all hardships and brutality, even sacrificing our lives, to fight the enemy, save the country, and save the people. We clearly understood the role and significance of revolutionary ethics for cadres and Party members as the most decisive factor in defeating the enemy. Because to defeat the enemy, we cannot simply need an army, weapons, tanks, cannons, and airplanes... but what is needed first and foremost, and is ultimately decisive, is the people's loyalty to the Party. And the people's understanding, trust in the Party, and their support for the entire nation to fight the enemy and wage a protracted war of resistance, is not based on directives, resolutions, and orders, but on the ethics of the cadres, Party members, and soldiers who are fighting alongside the people day and night, facing the enemy through life and death. Therefore, all cadres and Party members at that time, especially those operating deep within enemy-controlled areas, could not survive a single day, or even an hour, without cultivating and refining their ethics as taught by President Ho Chi Minh. Losing the people's trust meant losing their protection and support, and thus could not escape the bloodstained hands of the enemy. I have recounted my own story to illustrate the sacredness of the people's trust and love for the Party, as embodied in the revolutionary ethics of its cadres and Party members!
I returned to the Southern battlefield at the end of 1964 and for 10 consecutive years did not go to the North for a single day, despite being wounded three times, especially in 1972, when American B52s bombed Hanoi where my wife and children were evacuated. At that time, I was in enemy-controlled territory directing the Armed Youth Volunteer Team of Zone 5, coordinating with local forces to fight and eliminate the cruel oppressors and American advisors so that the people could rise up in a general uprising. So when I heard that my daughter had been killed by an American B52, I anxiously longed to go to the base and then to the North to visit my daughter and my wife. But the ethics of a cadre and Party member did not allow me to leave the battlefield, because at that time my comrades needed me, the people needed me, and if I was no longer by their side, how could the people's hearts be at peace? And, whenever we wanted to avoid falling into the hands of the enemy, whenever we wanted to defeat the enemy, we had to ensure that the people's hearts reached the heart of the Party. But to achieve that, we must live in a certain way, conduct ourselves in combat, and maintain a certain attitude and demeanor towards our comrades, fellow soldiers, compatriots, the elderly, women, and children, so that in the eyes of the people, they believe we are true cadres of Uncle Ho, true sons and daughters of the people.
The second story is about preparing for the 1972 Spring Offensive. I was assigned by the Regional Party Committee and Military Region 5 to the North Khanh Hoa Front to build an armed Youth Volunteer Team operating deep within Ninh Hoa town. After several months of operation, most of the secret tunnels in the garden and along the riverbank were discovered by the enemy. So, a family took me to hide in the bedroom of a female student. One day, the puppet regime's police came searching and discovered a secret tunnel near the riverbank, but there was no one inside. They threatened the family and were about to move to the neighboring house. But at that moment, the puppet district chief of Ninh Hoa shouted into the walkie-talkie, saying that there was a Viet Cong infiltrator in the house and that he had to be captured alive at all costs. At this point, the homeowner, who was hiding in a gutter on the roof, jumped down as if surrendering and persuaded the puppet regime's soldiers to take him to the district chief so he could reveal the names of other Viet Cong. The soldiers, overjoyed at the prospect of a large reward, quickly took him out of the house, and thanks to that, I escaped from the enemy. Later, many people wondered why the girl's grandparents, parents, and siblings dared to let me take shelter in her bedroom, unafraid I might sexually assault them. The whole family calmly replied that it was because they had great faith in the morality of Ho Chi Minh's cadres. And, after I escaped, there was nowhere safe to hide, so Uncle Tam Suc, in the middle of the night, went to the family cemetery to light incense and pray to the ancestors and spirits for permission to move the remains from one of the graves so that I could hide amidst the enemy's encirclement. During the ceremony, he begged the spirits to forgive him for doing something that offended the spirits of his ancestors, but he also prayed that if anyone were punished, it would only be him, and that they would protect me and keep me safe, because I was Ho Chi Minh's cadre!
Regarding the second question, we all agree that in any era, regardless of circumstances, conditions, or social environment, the cultivation and training of morality must always be built on a foundation, as in the spirit of President Ho Chi Minh's teachings: "Ready to sacrifice oneself for the country, wholeheartedly serving the people," because "losing the country means the destruction of the family, losing the people's trust means losing everything." And when we achieve the goal of a strong nation, a civilized society, and a happy people, our own happiness is also multiplied. As for the methods, the most essential is self-reflection, self-correction, and self-improvement, "Self-criticism and criticism are like washing your face every day." We believe that, although the current social situation is still fraught with negativity and complexity, if any Party member or cadre truly loves the people, trusts the Party, and is determined to learn and follow the thoughts, ethics, and style of Ho Chi Minh ; By consistently practicing self-discipline to prevent and minimize the rise of greed and individualism, one can overcome all temptations of material possessions, money, fame, status, and power, as well as the insidious traps of all kinds of enemies, thereby always preserving the warmth in the hearts of cadres and Party members, the hearts of the descendants of Uncle Ho. From there, it will contribute to the close connection between the Party's will and the people's will, and the people's will deeply permeate the Party's heart.
