In the Southeast region, there are lands that have gone through many historical ups and downs that have nurtured gentle people with aspirations to rise up along with the gifts of nature that have always created their own unique values. Tan Trieu grapefruit village with Tan Trieu grapefruit products is currently one of the famous agricultural brands in Bien Hoa with more than 320 years of history.
Famous agricultural brand of Dong Nai
In recent years, especially near the Lunar New Year, many people remind each other to find Tan Trieu grapefruit , a specialty of Bien Hoa - Dong Nai to worship their ancestors, then enjoy it as well as give it as a gift during Tet.
Early spring, we had the opportunity to return to the green land of Tan Trieu island and witnessed the scene of people busily preparing grapefruit for Tet. Here and there, under the canopy of lush gardens with ripe fruits, we could see the silhouettes of gardeners taking care of the trees, fertilizing, and pruning branches. "Hopefully this year's Tet crop will have higher grapefruit prices, because in the past two years affected by the Covid-19 pandemic, we have encountered many difficulties...", Ms. Ho Thi Loan, carefully holding a bunch of 5 grapefruits, heavy with fruit, shared.
Road to Tan Trieu grapefruit village
Following the delegation of Tan Binh commune officials to visit the grapefruit garden of Mr. Bui Van Ty, one of the best grapefruit growers in the area, we witnessed the clusters of fruit laden with greenery. Mr. Ty's grapefruit garden is 1.2 hectares wide, and in favorable years it brings in hundreds of millions of dong. Tan Trieu islet is about 350 hectares wide (out of the total area of the whole commune of 1,120 hectares). Almost every household on the island grows grapefruit, at most about ten hectares, at least a few sao. Currently, grapefruit growers only use organic fertilizers and probiotics, both to protect the environment and to ensure the "cleanliness" of the specialty brand of the grapefruit village.
Mr. Bui Van Ty is one of the good grapefruit growers in Tan Trieu grapefruit village.
Tan Trieu grapefruit currently has two main varieties: green-skinned grapefruit and orange-sugar grapefruit. Currently, both folk and initial research show that the product here has unique characteristics that cannot be found anywhere else, with thin skin, a very unique sweet taste, and a very high vitamin C content. The average price of grapefruit ranges from 700,000 VND to 1 million VND/dozen (1 dozen 12 fruits). "Many places take seeds from here to grow but they cannot produce sweet and fragrant grapefruit with high yield like here. Maybe because this grapefruit variety is only suitable for the water source and alluvium of Tan Trieu island", said an official of Tan Binh commune.
According to the Department of Science and Technology of Dong Nai province, in addition to suitable natural conditions, the human factor of hard work and desire for development has created the quality and brand of Tan Trieu grapefruit today. Currently, Tan Trieu grapefruit is implementing an agricultural production model according to VietGap and GlobalGap standards, which has reached many places in the world.
Highlights of agricultural economics
Tan Trieu Islet is a quiet, picturesque agricultural land, fertilized by the alluvium of the Dong Nai River - the longest inland river in Vietnam - all year round. This ancient land was formed in association with the process of "opening up the land" more than 320 years ago in the history of Bien Hoa - Dong Nai.
Households in Tan Trieu grapefruit village share about grapefruit growing model
According to historical records, around 1869, there was a Catholic church in Tan Trieu. When he came here from Brazil, the priest brought two grapefruit trees to plant in front of the church yard. The grapefruit trees grew quickly, bearing fruit every year. Later, people asked for grafting and the grapefruit trees were planted widely throughout the area. However, for many generations, people still considered the grapefruit trees simply a "favor" that the land and people brought, and the people on the peaceful island just enjoyed it.
According to the people, in the mid-19th century, after a great flood, all trees died due to inundation, only grapefruit trees still grew strongly among the vast alluvium, from then on people focused more on grapefruit trees.
Mr. Ngo Van Son, one of the villagers with the largest grapefruit growing area in Tan Trieu Islet, said that the villagers all believed that after the flood that filled the village with alluvium, the soil seemed to be more suitable for grapefruit trees, so the whole village switched to growing grapefruit as it is today. However, growing grapefruit did not help the villagers prosper from the beginning, they had to research and learn and go through many difficulties to get to where they are today.
Currently, Tan Trieu island grapefruit village has famous grapefruit gardens such as Mr. Nam Hue, Ngo Van Son, Bui Van Ty, Tu Than... To diversify grapefruit products, local people also create gourd-shaped grapefruit, grapefruit with embossed words "tai, loc, phu, quy"... or the shape of a map of the country; create grapefruit wine, grapefruit tea, grapefruit salad, grapefruit smoothie, grapefruit steamed chicken.

Coming to Tan Trieu Islet today, everyone will be immersed in the cool green space, the village roads full of flowers interspersed with vast grapefruit gardens with the gentle people. Mr. Le Van Thanh, Chairman of Tan Binh Commune People's Committee, said that the commune is currently submitting documents to be considered a model new rural commune, in which Tan Trieu Islet with the characteristics of the region is always considered a highlight in terms of agricultural economy and landscape. Mr. Nguyen Van Thuoc, Secretary of Vinh Cuu District Party Committee, in his meetings with us, emphasized that Tan Trieu Islet has special significance in terms of geography as well as specific agricultural development.
"With the advantage of Dong Nai River, bordering Bien Hoa center and not far from Ho Chi Minh City, Tan Trieu Islet is very suitable for planning the development of eco-tourism services and agricultural products, especially Tan Trieu grapefruit specialties in a fundamental, methodical and sustainable way," Mr. Thuoc shared.
