According to the Japan Times, from September 29, Japanese police will use artificial intelligence (AI) technology to identify social media posts with disguised recruitment content, aiming to commit crimes such as robbery and fraud.

Accordingly, AI was used to detect posts promising large sums of money for “yami baito”-style work - a term referring to shady part-time work - along with words that entice other criminal acts such as transporting or receiving money obtained through fraud.
The measure comes amid a growing problem of "yami baito" (black recruitment) in Japan. Earlier this year, a group of Japanese criminals were arrested for allegedly recruiting through social media to carry out a series of robberies across Japan. The criminals recruited mostly young people in their 20s and 30s who were in debt or wanted to make a large sum of money in a short period of time.
The Cyber Patrol Center, an organization independent of the police, has been tasked with conducting AI-powered online surveillance. Using natural language processing technology, the AI will not only search for specific keywords but also identify posts suspected of containing harmful information based on context. Social network X (formerly Twitter) and referral posts and comments on YouTube videos will be targeted for increased monitoring. The center will report the data it collects to the Internet Hotline Center, which will request website operators and internet service providers to remove posts that are determined to be illegal or harmful.
Between February and June 2023, Japanese police recommended the removal of 148 posts after assessing them as containing harmful information. Of those, 77 were removed by the end of July, most of which were related to recruiting people to commit murder and robbery.
