During his State visit to the Republic of Italy, on the afternoon of July 26, in Rome,President Vo Van Thuong met with President of the Italian House of Representatives Lorenzo Fontana.
Appreciating the close ties, friendship and solidarity between Vietnam and Italy with a 50-year history, President Vo Van Thuong affirmed that Vietnam considers Italy an important partner in Europe and is determined to work with senior Italian leaders to strengthen the Vietnam-Italy strategic partnership to a new stage of development, including the Vietnamese National Assembly and the Italian House of Representatives.
On this occasion, the President reiterated the mutual support and assistance between the two countries to overcome the difficult period caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, considering this a clear demonstration of the solidarity and attachment between the people of the two countries.
Warmly welcoming the State visit of President Vo Van Thuong and the high-ranking Vietnamese delegation, President of the House of Representatives Lorenzo Fontana affirmed that the visit is an important event in Vietnam-Italy relations as the two countries celebrate the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations and the 10th anniversary of the establishment of the Strategic Partnership framework.
The President of the Italian House of Representatives emphasized the mutual support between the two countries in responding to the Covid-19 pandemic, thanking the Vietnamese people for promptly donating masks to help the Italian people and Italy for helping Vietnam with vaccines to overcome the pandemic together.

Welcoming the developments in the Vietnam-Italy strategic partnership in all areas of cooperation in recent times, the President of the Italian Chamber of Deputies highly appreciated the cooperation between the Italian Parliament and the Vietnamese National Assembly; agreed with the proposal of President Vo Van Thuong on promoting cooperation between the legislative bodies of the two countries, including increasing delegation exchanges; and supported Vietnam's role as a bridge to promote relations between the Italian Parliament and the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Union Council.
To strengthen trust and create a favorable foundation for relations between the two countries, President Vo Van Thuong suggested that the two sides increase delegation exchanges at all levels, especially high-level ones, through State, Government and National Assembly channels, promote economic and trade pillars, expand cultural and educational relations, promote local cooperation and people-to-people exchanges.
Mr. Lorenzo Fontana said that the Italian House of Representatives’ approval of the Vietnam-EU Investment Protection Agreement (EVIPA) on the occasion of the President’s visit will contribute to facilitating investment cooperation between the two sides. The two sides also agreed to continue promoting cooperation in areas with great potential such as defense – security, science – technology.
House of Representatives President Lorenzo Fontana affirmed that he will send a delegation of young parliamentarians to attend the Global Conference of Young Parliamentarians hosted by Vietnam next September, hoping to have a closer cooperation agreement with the Vietnamese National Assembly.
On this occasion, President Vo Van Thuong conveyed the invitation of National Assembly Chairman Vuong Dinh Hue to President of the House of Representatives Lorenzo Fontana to visit Vietnam. The President of the Italian House of Representatives happily accepted the invitation.
