The agreement to build three Mogami-class frigates was announced in Melbourne by Australian Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Richard Marles and Japanese Defence Minister Koizumi Shinjiro, according to Kyodo News. The three warships will be built in Japan.
At a joint press conference aboard the Mogami-class destroyer Kumano following the talks, Mr. Marles said the first vessel is expected to be delivered to Australia in December 2029.

The Australian government , viewed by Japan as a key partner in maintaining stability in the Indo-Pacific region, has announced it will invest up to AUD 20 billion (USD 14.4 billion) over 10 years to develop a new fleet.
The defense ministers of Japan and Australia also signed a document pledging close cooperation to ensure the project progresses smoothly.
Kyodo News, citing several informed sources, revealed that contracts have been signed between the Australian government and companies, including Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd., which builds the Mogami-class ships.

Minister Koizumi stressed that the warship construction project for Australia would "significantly enhance interoperability and deliver broad benefits, including improved shipbuilding capabilities as well as maintenance and operational sustainment."
Minister Marles also emphasized that this project will "bring many opportunities for Australia and the development of the domestic defense industry."
The Australian government noted in a press release that the upgraded Mogami-class frigates have a range of up to 18,500 km and a vertical launch system with 32 launch tubes.
This type of ship will be equipped with surface-to-air and anti-ship missiles, capable of operating MH-60R Seahawk combat helicopters, and will have a crew of 92.
