Google recently announced its decision to invest $2 billion to build its first data center and cloud in Malaysia. In its 13 years of operation in this market, this is the largest investment the company has ever made. The increasing demand for AI (artificial intelligence) and cloud services, especially in Southeast Asia, has led to the decision of the "search giant".
Ms. Ruth Porat - Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of Alphabet (Google's parent company) said the investment is based on a partnership with the Malaysian government to promote cloud-first policies, including leading cybersecurity standards today.
Malaysia is becoming the destination of many Big Techs
Once operational, the center will support Google’s digital services such as Search, Maps, Workspace (a cloud-based productivity suite), providing cloud services to companies and organizations in both the public and private sectors. “The system will also serve the ‘AI Literacy’ program ineducation ,” Porat added.
Google has not yet disclosed the construction and operation time of the center, but it is estimated that the facility located in the central state of Selangor will contribute more than 3.2 billion USD to Malaysia's GDP and support the creation of 26,500 jobs by 2030.
Thus, in addition to Indonesia, Malaysia is also becoming an attractive destination for many large technology companies in the world (Big Tech). Among them, Nvidia Corporation cooperates with YT (Malaysia) to build infrastructure worth 4.3 billion USD. Microsoft also announced an investment of 2.2 billion USD in developing new cloud and AI infrastructure in early May.
A few days ago, on May 28, Apple officially announced the opening of an Apple Store at The Exchange TRX shopping mall complex in Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia). The store is scheduled to open on June 22, making Malaysia the third country in Southeast Asia to have a physical Apple Store after Singapore and Thailand.
