Last week, the Political Officer School announced that it would no longer use the A00 (Math, Physics, Chemistry) and C00 (Literature, History, Geography) combinations for admissions in 2026. Instead, the school added the C01 (Literature, Math, Physics) group, in addition to the old combinations, including C03 (Literature, Math, History), C04 (Literature, Math, Geography) and D01 (Literature, Math, English).
Similarly, in 2026, the Border Guard Academy will only use three admission combinations including C03, C04 and D01 for both Border Guard and Law majors. Compared to this year, the school will remove two traditional combinations, C00 and A01 (Math, Physics, English).
Meanwhile, the University of Technology, Vietnam National University, Hanoi , plans to stop considering admission to groups D01 (Math, Literature, English) and B00 (Math, Chemistry, Biology) when considering graduation exam scores.
In most majors, the school uses three combinations including A00 (Math, Physics, Chemistry), A01 (Math, Physics, English), X06 (Math, Physics, IT). Only the two majors of Biotechnology and Agricultural Technology recruit additional combination A02 (Math, Physics, Biology).
Regarding the admission method, Hanoi National University of Education 2 has stopped considering academic records for 17 majors, only applying to the majors of Preschool Education, Physical Education, Civic Education, Information Technology Pedagogy, Information Technology, Materials Science, Sports Management, Vietnamese Studies, Pedagogy and Political Economy.
The School of Interdisciplinary Sciences and Arts, Vietnam National University, Hanoi, also announced on November 25 that it would not use academic records to consider admission to all majors in 2026. Nha Trang University has abandoned this method since this year. Meanwhile, Ho Chi Minh City University of Industry and Trade plans to implement it from 2028.
Some admissions experts say that adjusting combination of candidates and reducing consideration of high school transcripts is an easy-to-see trend when admission regulations change from 2025.

Specifically, the Ministry of Education and Training requires that the admission combination must include at least three subjects, including Math or Literature with a weighted score of not less than 25%; from 2026, the common subjects of the combination must contribute at least 50% of the weighted score.
Mr. Le Dinh Nam, Assistant to the Training Department, Border Guard Academy, said this is the reason why the school adjusted so that all groups have two common subjects: Math and Literature. Also belonging to the military sector, the Political Officer School is similar.
According to the Head of Admissions at a university in Hanoi, in addition to this method, schools may only require one common subject, but double the score to ensure that this subject contributes at least 50% of the score.
In addition, candidates currently take two compulsory graduation exams, Math and Literature, and two optional subjects in the following groups: Foreign Languages (7 languages), History, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Geography, Economic and Legal Education, Information Technology, and Technology. Therefore, many new combinations are formed. Schools tend to use a variety of combinations instead of focusing on traditional combinations. As of 2025, the Ministry's system recorded 344 admission combinations, a record to date.
Regarding the admission based on academic records, the downward trend has appeared for about 1-2 years now. From 2022 to 2024, the number of candidates admitted by this method decreased by 9.32%, down to 27.86%.
According to Master Pham Thai Son, Director of the Admissions and Communications Center, Ho Chi Minh City University of Industry and Trade, schools found that this score was "not reliable enough", there was a situation of "beautification" or unfairness in testing and evaluation between schools and localities.
The leader of a Southern university agreed. He said that top public schools no longer consider independent transcript scores, but combine other factors such as foreign language certificates and competency assessment scores to increase reliability and screening.
According to the Ministry's statistics, the average score of candidates in 12 subjects is 0.12-2.26 points higher than the 2025 graduation exam. In particular, the difference in Math is up to 2.25 points compared to the exam score, and the difference in English is 1.57 points.
Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Van Thu, Head of Training Department of Hanoi Pedagogical University 2, pointed out another reason that could cause many schools to consider removing the consideration of high school academic results.
In previous years, schools were free to decide the quota ratio according to each method. For example, 10% of the quota was selected based on high school academic results. Therefore, schools could control the number of candidates and select the best group according to this method.
From 2025, the Ministry requires converting the admission scores of all methods to the high school graduation exam scores. This may cause the rate of candidates passing the school based on their transcripts to skyrocket, which is no longer in line with the school's orientation.
Therefore, Hanoi Pedagogical University 2 stopped considering transcripts in 17 highly competitive majors, with benchmark scores often above 24. The school only retains this method in some majors to ensure fairness for disadvantaged candidates, those with difficult conditions, who cannot be considered in any other way than transcript scores.
