AFP news agency quoted an official of the Islamic Hamas movement as saying that the armed group had withdrawn from ceasefire negotiations in Gaza, accusing Israel of "carrying out massacres" and claiming this was the reason for the suspension.
However, according to the official, Hamas' political leader in Qatar Ismail Haniyeh told international mediators that the Islamist movement was "ready to resume negotiations" once Israel "demonstrated its seriousness in reaching a ceasefire and a prisoner exchange agreement".
However, on the same day, the Financial Times reported that Izzat al-Rishq, a member of the Hamas Political Bureau, issued a statement stating that all previous information about the movement's decision to stop negotiations in response to Israel's attack on the Al-Mawasi refugee camp was baseless.
He added that Israel is trying to hinder the agreement to escalate the attack in Gaza.
On July 14, the Israeli army attacked a UN-run school in the Nuseirat refugee camp in central Gaza. The Israeli army accused the school of being "used as a hideout" for militants.
This is the fifth attack in just over a week on a Gaza school used as a shelter for Palestinians. According to the Health Ministry of the Hamas-controlled part of the Gaza Strip, the attack has killed at least 92 people and injured about 300 others.
Israel said the target of the strike was Hamas military commander Mohammed Deif and was awaiting a report on the results.
Hamas political leader Haniyeh had a series of contacts with mediators after the attack, saying that despite Hamas' positive and responsible responses to the ceasefire proposal to end the escalation of violence against civilians in Gaza, Israel's actions prevented the agreement from being reached.
Mr Haniyeh urged mediators to demand that Israel immediately stop its attacks.
