Today, August 28, the Department of Health of Dien Bien province informed that on August 26, Deputy Director of the Department of Health Luong Van Kien and the working group of the Department of Health came to inspect and direct the investigation and verification of the water source suspected of being contaminated with herbicides in Co Puc village (Hua Thanh commune, Dien Bien district).
According to a quick report from the Center for Disease Control (CDC) of Dien Bien province, from August 21 to 23, Hua Thanh Commune Health Station received 6 people from 4 households in Co Puc village for examination with symptoms of headache, dizziness, sore throat, and abdominal pain. The health station took professional measures and instructed the people to go home and continue to monitor their health.
A working group from the Department of Health of Dien Bien province inspected the area of water source suspected of being polluted in Co Puc village (Hua Thanh commune, Dien Bien district).
From August 24 to 26, Dien Bien District Medical Center received 20 cases with the above symptoms. Medical staff at the center examined, admitted and treated the patients.
After receiving information from the People's Committee of Hua Thanh commune about the incident, on June 24, the Center for Disease Control of Dien Bien province sent staff to coordinate with local authorities to verify the environmental incident regarding the domestic water source of the residential area in Co Puc village.
According to initial verification, on August 17, workers of Nam Co Hu Hydropower Plant sprayed herbicide along the water collection pipe system from Nam Khau Hu Lake to the plant's power plant; the water intake location (hole, well) has water pipes of 5 households parallel to the hydropower pipeline; the water intake is 1.5 m away from the hydropower pipeline and within the radius of herbicide spraying.
The center has taken field samples for testing and assessing water quality.
Through the report and on-site inspection at the area of water source suspected of being contaminated in Co Puc village, the Deputy Director of the Department of Health of Dien Bien province directed specialized units to continue to coordinate with local authorities to monitor and verify the water source suspected of being contaminated with herbicides in accordance with regulations.
Dien Bien District Medical Center prepares necessary conditions for emergency, admission and treatment for people, and at the same time assigns staff to monitor the health of households in Co Puc village, advising people to temporarily not use water sources suspected of being contaminated until there are test results and conclusions from competent authorities. Strengthen communication work to raise people's awareness in implementing legal regulations on the management and safe and effective use of pesticides.
Hua Thanh is a border commune of Dien Bien, inhabited by Thai, Mong, Kho Mu and Kinh ethnic groups.
