There is a high risk of landslides and rockfalls in northern Thai Nguyen.

The northern area of Thai Nguyen province, comprising 37 communes and wards, is characterized by its geological features and mountainous terrain, making it inherently vulnerable to landslides and rockfalls during the rainy season. Many high-risk areas are clearly visible, posing a threat to the safety of people's lives and property.

Following recent heavy rains, numerous cracks have appeared on the high mountain slopes behind the houses of many residents in Khuoi Luong village, Ba Be commune.

In his well-built house, the result of years of saving, Mr. Ban Van Ghen sadly said: "The mountain behind the house has already collapsed a couple of times, and now more cracks have appeared. So even though it's a new house, my family has had to move to temporary shelters many times when it rains heavily. Rainy nights are a constant source of worry for the whole family."

In Khuoi Luong, a project to relocate residents from disaster-prone areas to safe new homes was launched in 2025. However, due to weather conditions, the project was not completed on schedule, and as a result, the residents have not yet been relocated.

According to the Chairman of the People's Committee of Khuoi Luong commune, Nguyen Duc Dung, to prevent the risk of landslides and rockfalls for households in Khuoi Luong, the commune has directed the renovation of the facilities of the Don Den Research Station (formerly under the Department of Science and Technology of Bac Kan province), located far from the landslide-prone area, to ensure that residents can be temporarily relocated there when weather conditions become complicated. The commune has also requested the province to find solutions to complete the construction of the resettlement area to relocate households to live stably in the near future.

Due to the unique topography and geology of the northern communes and wards of Thai Nguyen , which features many high hills and mountains but with poorly cohesive and easily loose soil, after each rainy season, areas at high risk of landslides appear.

Following the heavy rains at the end of 2025, two landslide and hillside cracking incidents occurred in Phong Quang commune, specifically in Na Di and Na Cuom villages.

In Na Di village, the crack extends for about 300 meters, threatening the safety of five households living at the foot of the hill. In some areas, landslides have occurred, and water seeps from the hillside into residential areas during prolonged periods of rain, increasing the level of risk.

In Na Cuom village, a landslide has occurred in the hilly area, and cracks continue to run across the hillside, posing a threat of further landslides to 7 households.

Not only in communes but even in wards, which have better infrastructure, there is a very high risk of landslides and rockfalls.

In area 4A, Duc Xuan ward, in 2025, a major landslide occurred on the hill behind the houses of local residents, causing property damage and forcing the authorities to arrange temporary housing for 4 households.

With the rainy season approaching this year, large cracks have reappeared in this landslide-prone area, threatening the safety of 25 households living at the foot of the hill, and also posing a potential risk to National Highway 3, the operations of Bac Kan Garment Company with approximately 110 workers, and 13 households living to the left of the road.

Currently, in 37 communes and wards in the northern part of Thai Nguyen province, there are many areas at risk of landslides during the rainy season, including communes such as Yen Thinh, Nam Cuong, Quang Bach, Ngan Son, Hiep Luc, Thuong Quan, Phuc Loc, Thuong Minh, Ba Be, Cho Ra, Nghien Loan, Bang Thanh, Vinh Thong, Phu Thong…

In communes and wards with areas at risk of landslides, local authorities have proactively and decisively implemented response measures to ensure the safety of residents before this year's rainy season.

According to Nguyen Duc Thinh, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Phong Quang commune, the commune has intensified propaganda and advised people to closely monitor weather developments in order to promptly respond to landslides and rockfalls. The commune has also prepared plans and manpower to be ready to support people when situations occur.

Specifically in area 4A, Duc Xuan ward, due to the long landslide slope and the large volume of soil and rocks posing a significant risk of further landslides, immediate remediation is impossible. Therefore, the ward has requested the province to allocate funds for remediation. Duc Xuan ward is currently closely monitoring weather developments and preparing emergency temporary evacuation plans in case of landslides while awaiting funding for leveling and clearing.

To proactively prevent the risk of landslides and rockfalls, since the beginning of the year, the Thai Nguyen Department of Agriculture and Environment has established numerous inspection teams to conduct inspections at high-risk locations and areas, especially in the northern communes. Based on the inspection results, the Department recommends and directs the implementation of response measures to ensure the safety of the people, while also developing plans and projects to carry out definitive remedial measures.

The biggest challenge for Thai Nguyen in general, and the northern communes and wards in particular, is the difficulty in accurately predicting the risk of landslides, as this type of natural disaster is always unexpected and often occurs at night. Furthermore, due to limited resources, investing in comprehensive and complete solutions for all locations is impossible overnight; instead, priority must be given to high-risk and urgent areas first.

Therefore, the immediate solution for communes and wards in the north must still be to proactively monitor the weather situation and be prepared with evacuation plans in case of emergencies.

In light of this situation, the People's Committee of Thai Nguyen province has requested that departments, agencies, and localities proactively review areas at risk of landslides, flooding, and flash floods to promptly warn and evacuate people and property from dangerous areas when necessary.

Maintain a strict duty roster, closely monitor weather conditions and natural disasters, promptly report and coordinate the implementation of measures for prevention, response, and mitigation of natural disasters as prescribed.
