After enterprises in Hau Giang successfully completed official export orders of eel meat to the Chinese market, since the beginning of the year, the consumption and selling price of eel meat of eel farmers in the province have shown many encouraging signs. To better understand the above issue, Mr. Nguyen Minh Duc (photo) , Head of the Department of Quality, Processing, Market and Rural Development of the province, shared information with reporters of Hau Giang Newspaper.
In 2023, the unit organized 2 trade promotion trips to promote and connect the consumption of some agricultural, forestry and fishery products with export potential (jackfruit, durian, eel, snakehead fish, rice, etc.) of the province in Hanoi and at the Vietnam - China fair held in Lao Cai province. Through the above 2 trade promotion trips, at the beginning of this year, 2 partners from China approached the province's agricultural, forestry and fishery supply enterprises to cooperate in exporting agricultural products to the Chinese market. In particular, the first official export orders of eel products to the Chinese market were implemented by enterprises in the province, thereby creating many positive signals for eel farmers in Hau Giang in terms of consumption market and selling price.
Could you please tell us more specifically about the official export situation of eel meat products from the province to the Chinese market in recent times?
- Starting from around February this year, the province's eel processing and meat supplying enterprises have signed and successfully implemented the first orders to export eel meat to the Chinese market through official channels and this work has been maintained until now. At peak times, on average, the province's enterprises exported about 10 tons of eel meat to the Chinese market every day; currently, the daily demand is also 5-6 tons of eel meat exported to China but there is no supply.
Eel farmers in the province have been excited about the price of eel meat since this product was exported abroad.
When eel meat is exported abroad like in the past, how has the price of eel meat in Hau Giang improved, sir?
- Before exporting, eel farmers in the province mainly consumed domestically with low output and low selling prices; while in recent years, the eel farming movement of Hau Giang people and provinces and cities in the Mekong Delta has developed quite strongly, leading to a situation where supply exceeds demand, so traders often force down prices. However, since eel meat was exported to the Chinese market, the selling price of eel meat of farmers in the province has improved significantly.
Specifically, when the province's eel meat has not been exported, the selling price is only above or below 70,000 VND/kg, which is close to the production cost of the farmers, so the farmers do not get much profit. However, from February until now, when there is a market for eel export to China, the selling price of eel meat has been raised higher to above or below 100,000 VND/kg, thereby creating an attractive source of profit for farmers after selling eel. This also creates motivation for the eel meat farming movement of the people in the province to be restored, developed and expanded recently to meet market demand, especially the export market.
What is the current situation of eel farming and eel seed production in the province, sir?
- According to a preliminary survey by the provincial authorities, the current eel farming area of the whole province is more than 20,000m2 , with the form of high-density intensive eel farming, the total expected output is from 4,000-5,000 tons/harvest. Regarding the artificial production of eel fry in the province, many enterprises and establishments participate in the implementation, which is relatively rich and diverse; at the same time, there are also many units outside the province that have been and are cooperating to supply eel fry to people in the province. Thus, the demand for eel fry for farmers in the province is basically met.
However, people should note that currently, there are some sources of eel seeds that are infected with diseases, so during the purchasing process, people should choose reputable places to supply eel seeds to ensure high efficiency in farming and limit damage.
In addition, following the direction of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, the unit will coordinate with the Department of Animal Husbandry - Veterinary and Fisheries of the province, as well as related units to strengthen inspection and control of diseases at eel seed supply facilities in the province, as well as the eel seed market outside the province.
To ensure the eel meat meets the export requirements of the business, what do you advise people to pay attention to during the eel farming process?
- Currently, in the province, there are still many eel farming households that have not been trained in technical procedures for farming in the direction of food safety. Instead, people raise and use drugs based on experience or folklore, which leads to some batches of eels being contaminated with banned antibiotics when tested and sampled, so they cannot be exported.
From the above problem, in order for the source of eel meat to meet the requirements of the official export market, first of all the Chinese market which has a large demand as it is now, in the process of raising eels, people need to comply with the instructions for raising eels in the direction of food safety and hygiene from the specialized agencies of the agricultural sector, thereby creating stable output and good selling prices.
Currently, in the province, which enterprises export eel for consumption abroad, and when people want to cooperate with enterprises to consume exported eel, what should they do, sir?
- Currently, in the province, there is only one unit that officially exports eel meat to the Chinese market, which is Tam Duc One Member Co., Ltd. in Vi Thanh city. Other enterprises do not officially export but mainly collect goods from farmers, then cooperate with enterprises in and outside the province that officially export to foreign markets to consume eel for people.
Regarding the issue of people wanting to connect with businesses that consume eel for export, there are two ways. The first way is to contact the state agency, the Department of Quality, Processing, Market and Rural Development (phone number 02933582204), under the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of the province to receive technical support for raising eels to meet quality requirements for export and connecting output for people. The second way is to contact directly with Tam Duc One Member Co., Ltd., headquartered in Vi Thanh city.
Thank you sir!
