Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên01/11/2023

From the exhibition Childhood Like That in 2018 in Hanoi to Looking Back Today, it can be seen as a fairly systematic continuation of artist Bui Van Tuat in his artistic journey.

In the exhibition Looking back in the art space of Da Lat, artist Bui Van Tuat displayed more than 30 oil paintings with various sizes: the largest is 170x400 cm, the smallest is 35x30 cm, the remaining medium paintings have sizes of 55x73 cm, 40x50 cm.

The works at the exhibition show his thorough preparation for this trip to the mountain town.

Bui Van Tuat was born in 1982. He graduated from the Vietnam University of Fine Arts in 2007. Coming to painting, he participated in group exhibitions Tu Lap 1, 2, 3 in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City and a solo exhibition at the Vietnam Fine Arts Museum in 2018. He currently lives and works in Hanoi as an independent artist.

Looking at the works at the exhibition Looking back , I feel like the whole nature appears with the innocent beauty of pure childhood. The artist said that all the works in this exhibition depict the landscape and people of Ha Giang , the land that has left him the deepest impressions in his artistic life.

Most of the works were created in 2023 and have never been published. The exhibition also has some old works that he added because they fit the theme.

The work "Small yard in front of the house" took nearly 4 years of contemplation, from when Bui Van Tuan put down his brush until it was completed.

Most of the works displayed at the exhibition are portraits of Ha Giang children.

Regarding the exhibition's title Looking Back , artist Bui Van Tuat explained that it is also a way for him to reminisce about Ha Giang, the nature and people of the northern mountainous region during his experiences. "A necessary pause for me to look back on my creative journey from when I first started holding a brush to my first solo exhibition Childhood Like That, to see what I have and have not done, or in other words, what is left unfinished from the previous exhibition that I continue here," he said.

According to the artist, "Most importantly, I want to look back one last time on the past journey before ending it to move on to a new creative phase, a new exploration for myself, both in terms of ideas and methods of expression, to have works that are as expected."

Among the artists, perhaps Bui Van Tuan painted a lot about children and became famous thanks to... children. Bui Van Tuat looked at, captured and realized how lovely the world of children was. To do that, one must not only love, but also understand children in order to be able to blend into the children's souls to create.

Many works have found new owners after the exhibition.

Admiring the portraits of children in the Northern mountainous region by artist Bui Van Tuat, viewers seem to find their own childhood through the characteristic wild and bewildered features, and also see in them the mischievousness, stubbornness, and innocence of a time covered in mud.
