The IT labor market in Vietnam still lacks a large number of quality personnel, especially in areas that are receiving much attention such as artificial intelligence, data and information security.
E-commerce businesses cut staff
In the first months of this year, Navigos Group, a company specializing in providing human resource recruitment services, recorded a decrease in recruitment demand in many industries, including IT.
Analyzing the main cause of the recent decline in IT recruitment demand, Ms. Nguyen Thi Thu Giang, Deputy Director of Navigos Search North, a member of Navigos Group, said that during the period of Covid-19 pandemic and post-Covid-19 recovery, the recruitment demand of IT enterprises exploded to serve the growth of e-commerce and online transactions. However, recently, Vietnam has been affected by general economic factors and e-commerce is no longer as "hot" as in the previous period.
In fact, many related businesses are concerned about maintaining an overly cumbersome scale of operations while the number of new projects is decreasing. Therefore, in order to maintain effective business operations in the coming time, restructuring has been taking place in many technology companies with different scales of adjustment. When staff reductions occur, some positions no longer exist or the need for replacement recruitment is not much.
According to Navigos Search experts, businesses developing software or technology solutions and products are not much affected by the recent trend of declining recruitment demand. (Illustration photo)
“From recent fluctuations in the IT labor market, it is easy to see that e-commerce companies or companies related to e-commerce have cut a lot of staff. The reason is that they have developed too quickly before. Enterprises developing software or technology solutions and products are not affected much by other business models. If these enterprises restructure, it is mostly due to the decline in the number of projects in foreign markets,” Ms. Nguyen Thi Thu Giang added.
Vietnamese IT still lacks a large number of quality personnel
Speaking with VietNamNet , the Deputy Director of Navigos Search in the North commented that the recent fluctuations in the IT market are not long-term but are just a necessary adjustment after the market has developed too quickly in a short period of time.
Navigos Search still receives recruitment requests from businesses in the industry as they consider this adjustment period as an opportunity to attract qualified and skilled personnel to join the organization. IT is still changing every day in the world and Vietnam is not too far behind, so in the long run, the IT industry will still maintain its heat to serve Vietnam's digital transformation goals.
"The IT labor market in Vietnam still lacks a large number of quality personnel who can meet recruitment needs, especially in fields that are receiving much attention in Vietnam such as AI, Data and Cyber Security," Ms. Nguyen Thi Thu Giang emphasized.
Experts also agree that, in today's connected world, technology is an important part of businesses, especially those with rapid digitalization goals and strategies, so recruitment needs will continue to increase. For example, recently, some banks continue to recruit IT personnel to establish or complete digital centers.
However, Navigos Search experts pointed out that currently, the number of IT graduates each year is up to more than 50,000 people, but only about 30% meet the recruitment requirements of businesses. Obviously, the labor market still has many opportunities for personnel with good expertise, at the same time equipped with soft skills and foreign languages.
In fact, in recent times, in order to develop human resources to serve digital transformation to meet requirements, functional agencies such as the Ministry of Information and Communications and the Ministry of Education and Training have had many policies and solutions. In particular, digital universities are identified as the solution for developing Vietnam's digital human resources. At the same time, mobilizing social resources and businesses to participate in IT human resource training activities is also one of the steps that many higher education institutions have been implementing.
As an educational institution under the Ministry of Information and Communications, in addition to building a digital university model, in recent times, the Posts and Telecommunications Institute of Technology (PTIT) has opened many new majors and training programs to meet social needs, contributing to the development of human resources for digital transformation.

According to Mr. Dang Hoai Bac, Director of PTIT, in 2023, the school will open two new undergraduate training programs: Data Engineering and Application-oriented IT . In particular, Application-oriented IT is a program combined with technology enterprises, with the participation of leading experts from enterprises in training, and especially students can participate in the real environment of enterprises right from the first year. "This can be said to be an attractive program and can be replicated nationwide," Mr. Dang Hoai Bac shared.
Although the demand for IT human resources is still high in the coming time, experts also recommend that before deciding to study this field, young people should clearly determine their suitability, long-term orientation and strategy to build their own competitive advantage to be able to access good job opportunities in the market after graduation.
“When a candidate has many strengths and a good attitude, he or she will certainly be given priority by businesses. In addition, constantly cultivating professional advantages, the ability to update new technology, soft skills, and foreign languages to enhance one's own value will make an IT employee never out of "hot" in the labor market," said a Navigos Search expert.
