Unfortunate fate
7 years old, Nguyen Thi Ngoc Lam (living in block 12, Quynh Xuan ward, Hoang Mai town, Nghe An) weighs only 15kg, has a skinny body, bald head after being exposed to chemicals, and a tired, exhausted face. She lies curled up on the bed, watching her two older sisters playing outside in the yard.

It has been a long time since Lam was able to come home. Lam was very happy and smiled more. She also wanted to get up and play, but the terrible disease that had tormented her for nearly a year had left her very weak. With no strength left to get up, Lam could only curl up, look away, and try to be happy with her family.
Sitting next to her child, feeding her spoonfuls of thin porridge, Ms. Nguyen Thi Lan (31 years old, Lam's mother) sighed and shared that last August, when she had just entered first grade, Lam showed unusual signs such as swollen eyelids, pale skin, and frequent stomachaches. Touching her child's stomach, Ms. Lan discovered a small tumor, so she took her child to the doctor and collapsed when the doctor concluded that her child had neuroblastoma.
Only 7 years old, but Lam has suffered from a terrible cancer. Every time she has to undergo chemotherapy, Lam is in so much pain that she faints.
"My child had to drop out of school, instead spending long days in the hospital "fighting" a serious illness. Each chemotherapy session lasted 5 consecutive days and nights. I can't remember how many times my child was in critical condition. At that time, I could no longer stand because I thought I would never see my child again.
Every day, he has to endure the pain of needles piercing his young body, but he doesn't dare cry for fear of worrying his mother. He's only 7 years old, but he's a sensible child. The more sensible he becomes, the more heartbroken I feel," Lan choked up.
It's rare for Lam to come home like this, but she just lies in bed.
Up to now, Lam's immature body has undergone 2 surgeries to remove abdominal tumors and intestinal adhesions, and 8 chemotherapy sessions.
The uncertain future of a 7-year-old girl
Baby Lam is the third child in a family of 4 sisters (the oldest is 10 years old, the youngest just turned 2). The family's economy depends on more than one sao of rice field. To make money to support life, Mr. Nguyen Van Long (34 years old, baby Lam's father) goes by truck to carry cement every day.
The two older sisters and the little sister sat next to Lam playing.
"Before I didn't have a winch, the work was relatively steady, but for the past two years, on a lucky day I can earn 250,000-300,000 VND. The money I earn is just enough to cover my frugal living expenses and my children's education.
To have money to treat our child all this time, my wife and I have borrowed nearly 200 million VND from the bank, relatives and friends. The treatment time for our child is still very long, the cost is expensive and now I am helpless, I don't know how to handle it. If it continues like this, I am afraid my child will have to leave the hospital halfway, surrendering to fate," Mr. Long worried.
Since the day Lam got sick, Lan has been holding her child in the hospital fighting for her life. Long has been working alone and taking care of his three children at home. As if understanding the family situation, after school, their two older daughters come home to help their father with housework and take care of their younger siblings.
Ms. Lan with her daughter on her journey to cure her illness.
Previously, when being treated in Hanoi, Lam was allowed to go home for 2-3 days each month. Recently, she was transferred to Hue Central Hospital for treatment. Due to the long distance, poor health, and limited finances, the mother and child had to stay for a long time for treatment.
"Every meal, no matter how hard I try, my child can only eat half a bowl of thin porridge, and in the middle of the day, I drink a little milk. The illness has made my child increasingly emaciated, and it's so heartbreaking to see. Every time I see my child grimacing when getting a painful injection but not daring to cry, then asking when he can go home? When will his hair grow back like before? When will he be able to go to school?..., I don't know what to say, I just swallow my tears, hug him, comfort him, and encourage him to try. I just wish I could take on the illness so he can have peaceful days," Ms. Lan choked.
To survive, apart from chemicals, Lam can only eat thin porridge.
Talking about her dream, Lam tiredly replied: "I wish to be cured so that my mother will not have to worry and cry so much anymore. Seeing my mother cry makes me sad. I love my mother very much. I wish to be healthy so that I can go home and go to school like my friends."
Sharing about Lam's family situation, Mr. Le Khac Trung, Head of Block 12, Quynh Xuan Ward, said that since his daughter got a serious illness, Lan's family life has been extremely difficult. Mr. Long is the only worker with an unstable job, and the children are still young.
Lam's life and future are in dire need of help from philanthropists.
