TPO - This morning, nearly 1,300 contestants from primary to high school level gathered at Hanoi University of Science and Technology to participate in the national final round of the 2026 Asian Mathematical Olympiad.

The Asian Mathematical Olympiad in English (AIMO) competition for the 2025-2026 academic year, organized by Tien Phong newspaper in collaboration with Hanoi University of Science and Technology, attracted nearly 12,000 students from grades 2 to 12 nationwide.

After the preliminary round, nearly 1,300 children qualified for the national finals.

According to the organizers, this year's competition saw an impressive number of participants, five times more than in 2025, and more than double the number of contestants in the national final round.

These figures demonstrate the growing appeal of prestigious international mathematics competitions for high school students. They also confirm the increasing interest of students and parents in STEM subjects ( science , technology, engineering, and mathematics).

Although the competition didn't start until 10 am, a large number of students and parents had already gathered at the D6-D8 building of Hanoi University of Science and Technology since morning to prepare. For elementary school students, especially those in grade 2, many were participating in a competition held outside their school grounds for the first time, so they were very excited and displayed the innocent, carefree spirit typical of their age.

In examination room 107, the room designated for elementary school students, after the invigilator had called out the names of all students, one student was still "missing" to be called in. Upon inquiry, the invigilator realized the mistake and politely apologized for not calling the student's name. Despite this, the student patiently waited until the invigilator had called out all the other students' names before speaking up.

The AIMO 2026 organizing committee announced that the competition results will be revealed at 7:00 PM today, May 23rd, and the awards ceremony will be held at 8:00 AM on May 24th at the Youth Academy.
