In a 220 meter deep cave, Lieutenant Colonel Nguyen Chi Thanh was "extremely lonely", but thinking of the victim who had been lying cold for the past 3 years, he quickly dug and picked up each bone piece to bring up.
The story of searching for the victim in the deep cave was shared by Lieutenant Colonel Nguyen Chi Thanh, Deputy Head of the Fire Fighting and Rescue Department (Ho Chi Minh City Police) in a report broadcast at the National Advanced Model Honoring Conference in Hanoi on the morning of June 11. He said the victim had been dead for 3 years, and his remains were still lying in a 220-meter deep cave in Ha Giang . In December 2019, when organizing the search, the rescue team needed someone with experience and courage to go down there because there was a section of the cave that was only 50 centimeters wide.
At that time, Thanh volunteered with the thought that "if I don't go down, the victim will always lie there cold, the pain of his loved ones will never subside". After groping for more than two hours to reach the location, Lieutenant Colonel Thanh felt "alone and extremely scared". Because the remains were buried under a layer of soil and rocks more than a meter deep, he had to use his hands to dig and collect the bones to bring them up. Looking at the tears of the victim's family when receiving the remains, he understood that the hardship he had gone through was not in vain.

After 22 years of doing rescue missions, Lieutenant Colonel Thanh said the motivation that always urges him to rush into dangerous places is the cries for help from victims or the tears of their relatives. "Rescuing what is left from the lost or at least finding a part of the victim makes me feel at ease. Everyone is afraid of death, but because of the mission, when people need me, I am always ready," he said through the report. It is not uncommon for rescue soldiers to fall from the 3rd floor to the ground, their bodies covered with wounds, dermatitis, chronic pneumonia and need to be treated with injections for 3-6 months.
With extensive experience and courage, in February 2023, Lieutenant Colonel Thanh was selected by the Ministry of Public Security to join the Rescue Team of the Vietnamese police to participate in the search for victims of the earthquake disaster in Türkiye.
At the conference, nearly 1,200 delegates were silent when watching the reportage showing the love and silent sacrifice of Lieutenant Colonel Pham Van Huong (DK1/20 Platform, Naval Region 2 Command) and his wife Ngo Thi Hien. Having been attached to the sea and islands for nearly 30 years, Mr. Huong, like many of his naval comrades on duty on remote islands and DK1 Platform, are often absent from important family events. When his parents and children are sick, his wife has to shoulder the burden.
Lieutenant Colonel Huong said he suffered less, his wife and children suffered more. But every family has their own hardships, he can only encourage his family with words, letters, and phone calls, it is difficult to directly help. "No matter how difficult it is, soldiers will be determined to complete their mission, guarding the DK1 platform to protect the Fatherland," he shared.
For nearly 30 years of love and marriage, Ngo Thi Hien often sends her longing for her husband through letters sent by ship to sea and now through phone calls that are sometimes interrupted by poor signal. She understands his work and compares their relationship to the story between a boat and the sea. Sometimes she still teases her husband, "Home is an inn, the sea is your real home."

Among the 700 delegates representing outstanding collectives and individuals who were honored, there were many familiar faces to the public, such as Coach Mai Duc Chung. Without saying much about himself, Mr. Chung shared about the collective, about how the coaching staff always has a way to encourage the competitive spirit of the female players. In each training session, the girls are divided into groups or 1-on-1, whoever comes in first or second is rewarded. The reward is sometimes a bottle of soft drink, but it always encourages the players' will.
Mr. Chung said the biggest challenge for the women's team in the World Cup in July and August is the presence of strong teams such as the US, Switzerland, and Portugal. The Vietnamese girls with less physical strength and height may be at a disadvantage, but this is also an opportunity for the Vietnamese national anthem to be sung loudly in the biggest football tournament on the planet. "The journey to the World Cup is not easy, the results may not be as expected, but the whole team will try their best to leave their mark in each match," he said.
Appearing on stage, Nguyen Thi Oanh, the golden girl of Vietnamese athletics, said that the spirit of loving the Fatherland and her people is the source of motivation that encourages her every day in competition. Village elder K'Tieu (Lam Dong), a typical example of mobilizing people to donate land for road construction, played gongs to stir up the hall.
Armed Forces Hero Le Thanh Dao, a fighter pilot who once flew a Mig-21, as well as Hero Ngo Thi Tuyen, a female militiawoman who once amazed the world by carrying two boxes of ammunition weighing nearly a hundred kilograms, expressed their confidence in the younger generation to continue the patriotic emulation spirit of their ancestors. Ms. Tuyen said that patriotism and the spirit of emulation are always present in the blood of Vietnamese people from young to old. She believes that the younger generation, who are well-educated and ready to learn new things, can shoulder the responsibility of bringing the country forward and will do better than their predecessors.

Praising the typical examples, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh recalled President Ho Chi Minh's call for patriotic emulation 75 years ago as a call to arms for the nation, becoming the driving force to lead the nation from one victory to another. From resistance war to peace, emulation movements, in addition to uniting the efforts and consensus of the whole country, also created great material and spiritual strength to promote socio-economic development, strengthen national defense and security, and protect the Fatherland.
The Prime Minister believes that many individuals, although not named today, are still quietly contributing day and night, as the song says, "Everyone chooses the easy work, who will take the hard work?" and deserve to be honored. He assigned tasks to all levels and sectors to promote the start-up and innovation movement; emulation must have a focus, key points, avoid ostentation, formality, taking advantage of personal purposes or group interests...
The Prime Minister also advised the advanced models not to be satisfied but to maintain their enthusiasm and contribute more to the community and the country. "This responsibility is placed on your shoulders. It is difficult to achieve honor, but it is even more difficult to maintain the title and love. I hope that each advanced model is like a flower spreading its fragrance and color, inspiring good things," he said.
