According to Dr. Quách Thu Trang, a specialist in Dermatology at Tâm Anh General Hospital in Hanoi , healthy skin is not only the result of expensive cosmetics but also depends on daily skincare habits.

Drinking warm water after waking up helps rehydrate the body, as it naturally loses water overnight through respiration and excretion. When adequately hydrated, the skin becomes softer, more elastic, and healthier-looking. This method also helps replenish fluids, promotes circulation, supports liver and kidney function, and enhances metabolism. You can add honey and a few slices of lemon to increase moisturizing and antioxidant effects from within. The vitamin C in lemon helps brighten the skin and prevent acne.

Basic facial cleansing after waking up helps to unclog pores and prepare the skin to absorb nutrients from the next skincare step. After a long night, the skin often accumulates sebum, dirt, and bacteria from the environment or bedding. Washing your face with cool water and gently massaging for about 60 seconds is enough to effectively cleanse without damaging the skin's protective barrier.

People with oily or acne-prone skin should choose a cleanser containing salicylic acid – a type of BHA that deeply cleanses pores, helps control sebum, and reduces the risk of acne formation. For dry or sensitive skin, prioritize gentle products with a balanced pH (around 5.5), free of alcohol, soap, or fragrances, to avoid irritation and prevent dryness. Gently massage the face in circular motions from the inside out to stimulate blood circulation, relax facial muscles, support lymphatic drainage, and brighten the skin naturally.

Apply a cold compress to your face for 1-2 minutes after washing to tighten pores, reduce puffiness, and soothe the skin. Then, use a pH-balancing toner to prepare your skin for better absorption of nutrients from subsequent products.

Proper moisturizing helps restore the skin's natural protective barrier, preventing dehydration, increasing softness and firmness, slowing down the aging process, reducing fine wrinkles, and minimizing the risk of acne caused by dehydration and excessive oil production. Dr. Trang advises using suitable moisturizing products, including serums containing active ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, and glycerin, which effectively attract and retain water. Moisturizers should be chosen according to skin type for optimal effectiveness and to avoid clogged pores.

Apply broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher to protect your skin cells from the effects of sunlight. Even on cloudy days or indoors, UVA/UVB rays can still penetrate glass and negatively impact your skin. Therefore, apply sunscreen at least 15-20 minutes before going outside. If you are outdoors, reapply every 2-3 hours to maintain protection against aging, dark spots, and the risk of skin cancer.

Engage in light exercise for 10-20 minutes each morning with gentle activities such as walking, stretching, or yoga to improve blood circulation, deliver oxygen and nutrients to the skin, and eliminate toxins through sweat. If you don't have time to exercise, meditating or practicing deep breathing for a few minutes can also help reduce stress – a factor that increases cortisol levels, leading to acne, dull skin, and premature aging.

A healthy breakfast provides essential nutrients such as protein, fiber, healthy fats, and vitamins, especially vitamin C and zinc. These not only energize the body but also help stabilize blood sugar and nourish the skin from within.

Fruits rich in vitamin C, such as oranges, kiwis, and strawberries, promote collagen production and brighten the skin. Seeds like oats, chia seeds, and flax seeds provide plenty of omega-3s and fiber, which reduce inflammation and protect the skin barrier. Eggs, yogurt, and legumes are good sources of protein and contain zinc, which supports skin regeneration and repair.

Limit your intake of refined sugar , fatty dairy products, and fast food, as these can increase inflammation, cause acne, and dull your skin over time.

Avoid heavy makeup as it can clog pores. People should use a lightweight, oil-free foundation with added moisturizer and sun protection. Thoroughly remove makeup at the end of the day to avoid breakouts and dullness.

Limit your phone use immediately after waking up because the blue light from the screen can penetrate the epidermis, affecting the deeper layers of the skin. Dr. Trang said that prolonged exposure to this light increases oxidative stress, breaks down cellular DNA, causes hyperpigmentation, and accelerates premature aging.

Maintaining these habits regularly not only helps keep your skin healthy and radiant, but also invests in lasting health and beauty.
