The provincial center is Gia Nghia city, 125km from Buon Ma Thuot on National Highway 14, about 250km south of Ho Chi Minh City, about 689km north of Da Nang, and about 1,358km north of Hanoi .
The province borders Dak Lak province to the east and north; Binh Phuoc province and Mondulkiri province, Cambodia to the west with a border of about 141km; Lam Dong province to the south and southeast.

Song Be province was established on July 2, 1976 on the basis of merging two provinces of Binh Duong (called Thu Dau Mot province by the revolutionary government), Binh Phuoc (merged by the revolutionary government with the two provinces of Binh Long and Phuoc Long that existed before) and three communes of An Binh, Binh An, Dong Hoa of Thu Duc district.

Binh Duong province includes Thu Dau Mot town and 3 districts: Ben Cat, Tan Uyen, Thuan An (now includes 5 cities: Thu Dau Mot, Di An, Thuan An, Tan Uyen, Ben Cat and 4 districts: Bau Bang, Bac Tan Uyen, Phu Giao, Dau Tieng). The provincial capital is located in Thu Dau Mot town.
Binh Phuoc province consists of 5 districts: Binh Long, Bu Dang, Dong Phu, Loc Ninh, Phuoc Long (today includes Dong Xoai city, 3 towns: Binh Long, Phuoc Long, Chon Thanh and 8 districts: Bu Dang, Bu Dop, Bu Gia Map, Dong Phu, Hon Quan, Loc Ninh, Phu Rieng). The provincial capital is located in Dong Xoai city.

In May 2008, the National Assembly issued Resolution 15 on adjusting the administrative boundaries of Hanoi City and a number of related provinces. The Resolution took effect from August 1, 2008.
According to the Resolution, the capital includes: Hanoi, the entire Ha Tay province, Me Linh district (Vinh Phuc) and 4 communes of Luong Son district (Hoa Binh).
Thus, from 2008 to present, Vietnam has 63 provinces/cities, including 58 provinces and 5 centrally-run cities.
