This also serves as a source of motivation and confidence, helping people to improve their lives and achieve stability.

Warmth in the new home

These days, Ms. Vang Thi Mai and her husband, from Lang Sang village, Pung Luong commune ( Lao Cai province), are busy cleaning their house and buying household items and equipment to prepare for Tet (Lunar New Year). A look of joy shines on her face as this year her whole family will be celebrating Tet in their new home.

The newly completed houses will help the poor in Lao Cai settle down.

Ms. Mai and her husband are Hmong ethnic people, classified as a poor household, and lack stable employment. Previously, their family of four lived in a small, dilapidated wooden house. The dream of owning a sturdy house was once unattainable. However, thanks to the Lao Cai province's housing support program for poor households in 2025, her family received 60 million VND in assistance; along with help from relatives and friends, they have now built a new, sturdy, and spacious house.

Ms. Vang Thi Mai emotionally shared that she and her husband had always worried and dreamed of having a more spacious house for their family. They are very happy that, with the support of the government, they have completed their house in nearly a month, and their children can celebrate Tet peacefully in their new home. In their new house, the family can sleep soundly, no longer worrying about having to rush around to make room for the children to sleep when it rains.

Sharing her joy, Ms. Vang Thi Mai emotionally stated that for many years, she and her husband had been worried about providing housing for their children. Thanks to government support, their family has completed their new home and can now celebrate Tet (Lunar New Year) peacefully and warmly. Since having the new house, the family can live in peace and no longer worry about rain or cold winds. "This is the first Tet I've felt warmer and happier because my long-held wish has come true. I thank the Party, the State, and the authorities at all levels in Lao Cai province," Ms. Mai said.

Sharing the joy with Ms. Mai, from the 2025 housing project for poor households, Mr. Thao Thanh Sinh's family in Lang Sang village, Pung Luong commune, received 60 million VND in support for house construction. In the days leading up to the Lunar New Year, Mr. and Mrs. Sinh were busy completing the final stages of their house so that their children could celebrate the New Year in their new home.

Gazing at his long-awaited dream home, Mr. Thào Thành Sinh excitedly shared that his family was classified as a poor household, and their previous house was only about 30 square meters. Everyday life was cramped and inconvenient. "Thanks to the care and support from the Party and the State, my wife and I are very grateful to have a new house. I will try to finish the house before December 25th (lunar calendar) so my wife and children can clean the house and do their Tet shopping," Mr. Sinh said happily.

Mr. and Mrs. Sinh are working hard to complete their new house in time for Tet (Lunar New Year).

The entire village of Lang Sang, Pung Luong commune, currently has 186 households and over 900 inhabitants, with 98% being ethnic Mong people. Among them, there are 10 poor households and 8 near-poor households. In 2025, thanks to the attention of the Party and the State, Lang Sang village had 3 households receiving financial support to build houses. To date, these households have basically completed construction and are cleaning up their houses in preparation for Tet (Lunar New Year).

Village head Thao A Sinh said that the villagers expressed their gratitude to the Party, the State, and the authorities at all levels in Lao Cai province for their attention and for implementing many practical policies to support people in remote areas and ethnic minority communities. Currently, there are still 7 households living in temporary houses in the village, and they hope to continue receiving support in 2026 to stabilize their housing and confidently develop their economy .

* Humanistic policies

Implementing the housing support project for poor households, in 2025, Púng Luông commune had 130 poor and near-poor households receiving support to build houses at a rate of 60 million VND/household, including 5 houses funded through social mobilization. To date, all 130 houses have been completed, each with a usable area of 80 m² or more, meeting the "3 solid" standards (solid foundation, solid frame, solid roof), with a total cost of over 7.8 billion VND.

According to Mr. Thào A Phềnh, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Púng Luông commune, from the beginning of the year, the commune had developed a detailed plan, assigned officials to be in charge of each household; and coordinated with the villages to mobilize people to contribute labor and find suitable land. Completing the houses before Tet helps poor households celebrate Tet peacefully and feel secure in their lives.

Poverty reduction and care for the poor and those eligible for social welfare policies are major and consistent policies of the Party and the State. Despite being a mountainous, border province with challenging economic conditions, Lao Cai has always paid special attention to harmonizing economic development with social development, improving the quality of life and happiness of its people.

The province has issued numerous schemes and policies to effectively implement sustainable poverty reduction, ensuring that the poor and those eligible for social welfare policies have equitable access to social services.

According to Vice Chairman of the Lao Cai Provincial People's Committee Vu Thi Hien Hanh, strictly adhering to Directive No. 55-CT/TW dated December 22, 2025, of the Party Central Committee on organizing the Lunar New Year of the Horse in 2026 and Directive No. 36 of the Prime Minister on organizing the Lunar New Year of the Horse in 2026 in a joyful, healthy, safe, and economical manner, Lao Cai province has meticulously prepared the conditions for the people to celebrate the New Year in a joyful, healthy, safe, and warm atmosphere, ensuring that no one is left behind.

Regarding social welfare, in 2025, Lao Cai province completed the construction and repair of 8,700 houses for poor households and families entitled to preferential policies with a budget of over 1,000 billion VND; and completed 470 houses for families whose homes were damaged by storms and floods in the spirit of the "Quang Trung Campaign," ensuring that people could enjoy the Spring Festival and celebrate Tet.

In addition, the province established 19 working groups led by members of the Standing Committee of the Provincial Party Committee, leaders of the Provincial People's Council and the Provincial People's Committee to visit and present Tet gifts promptly to eligible individuals; and directed communes and wards to visit and present gifts to policy beneficiary families, poor households, people with meritorious services, and influential people in the community. The province plans to distribute 77,110 gifts, with a budget of nearly 40 billion VND, during this year's Lunar New Year.

The well-built and donated houses have instilled confidence and motivation in poor households, helping them to improve their lives and stabilize, contributing to a 2.68% reduction in the province's poverty rate by 2025, making Lao Cai a shining example in the Northwest region and the whole country.
