The competitive spirit at Hill 58

Early in the morning on Hill 58, the training ground of officers and soldiers of Company 6, Battalion 5, Regiment 148, Division 316 (Military Region 2) resounds with the loud commands of the commander and the rhythmic movements of the troops as they change training content. Under the sweltering early summer sun, each squad and platoon actively practices tactical exercises with high concentration. The competitive spirit is evident on the faces of each young soldier.

Training time and break time on the training ground for officers and soldiers of Regiment 148, Division 316 (Military Region 2).

Constantly monitoring the activities of the troops from the moment they march to the training ground until they return to the barracks, Lieutenant Colonel Luong Vinh Phuc, Secretary of the Party Committee and Political Commissar of Regiment 148, has become a source of moral support for the soldiers. He shared: “The '75 Days of Rapid, Decisive Victory' emulation campaign was concretized by the unit with realistic targets. The Party committee and commanders at all levels required each officer and soldier to clearly understand the political significance of the event, transforming pride into practical action. As a result, 100% of the troops participated in training, regular discipline was strictly maintained, and the quality of each training subject improved significantly.”

Observing a unit tactical training session, we clearly saw the precise actions in every movement of the soldiers. From movement postures and coordination to handling situations, everything was done quickly and accurately.

Traditional teaching methods are lively and effective.

In addition to focusing on improving training quality, political education is also implemented concurrently by the Party committees and commanders of units within the Division. Stories about the Division's heroic fighting traditions and the examples of People's Armed Forces Heroes from the unit, such as La Van Cau, Be Van Dan, Hoang Van No, Chu Van Pu… along with exemplary generals who were former officers and commanders who rose through the ranks of the 316th Division, such as General Chu Huy Man, Lieutenant General Nguyen Huu An, Lieutenant General Dao Trong Lich… are integrated into lessons and activities.

Soldiers of the 316th Division are building a bright, green, clean, and beautiful environment.

Lieutenant Colonel Le Duc Huy, Secretary of the Party Committee and Political Commissar of the Regiment, emphasized: "Tradition is the blood, sweat, tears, iron will, and belief in a victorious tomorrow of previous generations. Understanding this, each officer and soldier will feel responsible for preserving and promoting it."

Activities such as history quizzes, youth forums, cultural exchanges, and young officer seminars were also organized in a variety of ways by units under the 316th Division, creating a space for officers and soldiers to deeply understand and appreciate the glorious traditions of the unit, thereby further cherishing and being grateful for the sacrifices made by previous generations for the life we have today.

That spirit of emulation is clearly reflected in the thoughts of each young soldier. Private Ta Van Diep, a soldier in Platoon 7, Company 3, Battalion 7, Regiment 98, confided: “I am very proud to study and train at Division 316, a unit with a long tradition and many glorious victories. In particular, the environment in the unit is very friendly, the commanders are approachable and caring towards the soldiers. Comrades are united and help each other in tasks, which makes me feel secure and attached to the unit.”

These heartfelt sentiments reflect a reality: Tradition should not only be conveyed through propaganda but also nurtured through emotions, connection, and sharing. This is also a way to build strong political resolve for the troops.

Transform tradition into determination and action.

Returning to the barracks of the 8th Battalion, 98th Regiment, we easily noticed the significant changes in every corner. Under the guidance and direction of Captain Hoang Anh The, the Battalion's Political Officer, officers and soldiers were busily completing projects to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Division's founding and its second Heroic Unit award. Internal roads were swept clean; flowerbeds, ornamental plants, and lawns were meticulously trimmed and cared for; and propaganda banners and slogans were arranged systematically and scientifically . According to Captain Hoang Anh The, building a "bright, green, clean, and beautiful" landscape not only serves the anniversary celebration but also contributes to improving the morale of the soldiers.

Visiting the units of the 316th Division these days, we also witnessed hundreds of projects by the unit's youth to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the unit's tradition and the awarding of the title of Hero of the People's Armed Forces for the second time, along with a system of models, technical innovations, and documentary photos reflecting the achievements, intelligence, and creativity of the officers and soldiers of the entire Division throughout the years.

In a conversation with us, Colonel Lam Dung Tien, Secretary of the Party Committee and Political Commissar of the 316th Division, expressed his heartfelt commitment: “Preserving and promoting the unit's precious traditions is a command to act from the heart of every officer and soldier. The Party Committee and the Division's command are always thinking and pondering how to ensure that the sacrifices and traditional values of previous generations do not remain merely ingrained in our awareness, but gradually permeate the daily thoughts and actions of our troops.”

According to Colonel Lam Dung Tien, achieving this requires perseverance and the simultaneous implementation of many solutions. First, the Party Committee and the Division's command focus on leading and directing the innovation of the content and form of traditional education in a lively, relatable way, linked to the specific tasks of each unit; combining historical education with practical education, and learning with experience. "We emphasize incorporating traditions into every political lesson, every meeting, and every emulation movement; using real-life examples to spread awareness. At the same time, we promote the exemplary role of officers at all levels, especially leading officers, because soldiers will trust and follow what they see in reality," Colonel Lam Dung Tien emphasized.

Furthermore, the Division closely integrates traditional education with building a regular army, instilling discipline, improving training quality, and ensuring combat readiness, so that each specific achievement becomes a vivid testament to the continuing tradition. “When each officer and soldier deeply understands the tradition, they will consciously transform their pride into determination and concrete actions in every task. That is the most practical way to preserve and further glorify the tradition of the twice-heroic 316th Division,” the Division's Political Commissar affirmed.

Seventy-five years of building, fighting, and maturing have forged the tradition of "Loyalty, Self-reliance, Unity, Resilience, Creativity, and Victory" of the 316th Division. In today's "double joy," that tradition continues to be strongly revived, becoming the driving force for every officer and soldier of the Division to steadfastly move forward on a new path, worthy of the noble title bestowed by the Party, the State, and the people.
