Nestled at the foot of Chuong Son mountain, Ngo Xa Pagoda (Ngo Xa village, Tan Minh commune, Ninh Binh province) is one of the oldest pagodas in Northern Vietnam. With a history dating back to the reign of King Ly Nhan Tong (1072-1127), it is not only a peaceful spiritual destination but also a living museum preserving the thousand-year-old artistic values of the nation.

Ly Dynasty architecture amidst a peaceful countryside.
The National Historical and Cultural Relic Complex of Ngo Xa communal house and pagoda, and Ne pagoda (also known as Phi Lai pagoda) is associated with the legend of three empresses of the Ly Dynasty who built eight pagodas on the mountaintop. Over time, the structures were dismantled and moved to the foot of the mountain for easier worship.
In October 2024, the project to preserve and restore this complex of historical relics commenced with a total investment of approximately 60 billion VND. After more than a year of meticulous construction, the new appearance of the pagoda is basically complete, reflecting traditional architecture with a sturdy system of pillars and beams made of ironwood.

Notably, the temple roof, after restoration, still retains its ancient tiles, creating a harmonious blend of old and new. The artisans skillfully restored the panel doors and the intricate carvings of dragons, clouds, and flowers, showcasing the robust yet refined style of folk art.
Admire the thousand-year-old national treasure.
The most valuable highlight at Ngo Xa Pagoda is the statue of Amitabha Buddha made of green stone, dating back to the Ly Dynasty. This is one of the earliest stone statues still preserved in Northern Vietnam, possessing immense historical and cultural value.

The statue has a total height of approximately 2 meters, with the statue itself measuring 0.92 meters and the pedestal 1.08 meters. A unique feature of this treasure is that the head and body are joined together using mortise and tenon joints, allowing them to be detached. The flat, circular base is carved with two lions holding pearls, while the lotus pedestal is decorated with a pair of dragons flanking it, featuring dense and exquisite carvings.
